The Duffer brothers, who created the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, recently revealed the story behind a significant casting choice for the fifth and final season. The first episodes of this season have now been released, with the full season being rolled out in three parts. These initial episodes follow the characters after the dramatic events of season four, showing the town of Hawkins under quarantine and its residents secretly fighting against the military and the villain, Vecna.
Season 5 of Stranger Things introduces several new characters who play important roles. These include Mike’s sister, Holly, who is central to the storyline, and Derek Turnbow, an unexpected helper. Their teacher, Ms. Harris, also makes a significant appearance, noticing Holly’s habit of seemingly talking to things others can’t see. Hope Hynes Love plays Ms. Harris, and the Duffer brothers revealed she was a real-life influence from their own high school days.
I saw this really cool post from Ross Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, on Instagram. He shared a picture of their high school drama teacher, Ms. Harris – or Hynes Love as she’s known now! He said she was a huge influence on him and his brother, really helping them through some tough times in high school and even sparking their interest in the creative fields that led to the show. It was a sweet reminder of how important art teachers are, and he gave a shout-out to all teachers who are making a difference in kids’ lives.
My brother and I really struggled through high school. But Hope believed in us, even when we didn’t believe in ourselves, and gave us the courage to get through those years and eventually move to Los Angeles to pursue our ambitions.
The Duffer Brothers Packed ‘Stranger Things’ With Influential References
In addition to casting Hope Hynes Love as Ms. Harris for season 5, the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, have populated the show with actors who were prominent in the films and shows they loved as kids. While Winona Ryder, a major star during their childhood, is a central figure, they’ve also included actors like Linda Hamilton (known from Terminator), Sean Astin (The Goonies), and Paul Reiser (Aliens). This casting reflects the nostalgic influences that helped shape the creators’ vision for the series.
Beyond the actors, Stranger Things is full of visual and thematic nods to the movies and shows that inspired its creators. The first season heavily referenced Steven Spielberg’s E.T., and that trend continued in later seasons. The show has paid tribute to films like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It’s clear the Duffer brothers want to honor their influences, not just in film and television, and the final season will likely include more interesting characters and casting choices, like Ms. Harris.
