It’s surprising to see Netflix and AMC Theatres working together, but even more surprising is what they’re doing: Netflix will debut the final two episodes of its hit show Stranger Things in select movie theaters to celebrate the New Year. While the finale will still be available to stream on Netflix, the company is partnering with 350 theaters in the US and Canada to host a special fan event on December 31st and January 1st. This idea came up recently when the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, mentioned wanting fans to experience the finale with the high-quality sound and visuals they intended, and to enjoy it together in a communal setting.
I was really surprised to read that Netflix’s creative chief, Bela Bajaria, didn’t think showing shows in theaters was necessary. She seemed confident that Stranger Things thriving only on streaming proved it didn’t need extra buzz or a community built around shared experiences. But things seem to be changing! It turns out that interview was done a while ago, and Puck reported just this week that Netflix and AMC are actually working together now, showing KPop Demon Hunters in AMC theaters. Apparently, they hadn’t finalized the deal when they spoke to Variety for that profile, so Bejaria hadn’t been able to share the news yet. I’ve reached out to both Netflix and AMC to see if they’ll confirm everything.
The Duffer Brothers are likely very happy with this outcome. They recently made a deal with Paramount, and chose to leave Netflix partly because Netflix rarely releases shows in theaters. Still, Netflix did give the creators of its most popular show a generous parting gift.
