It’s been thirteen years since The Office ended, but Steve Carell hasn’t lost his love for TV despite a successful run in movies. His new series proves he’s still a major draw – he’s been nominated for 11 Primetime Emmys! This feel-good show, from a co-creator of Ted Lasso, stars Carell alongside a talented cast, bringing him back to the forefront of television.
The new HBO comedy, Rooster, had a very strong start, becoming the most-watched comedy debut on HBO in over ten years, according to The Wrap. It attracted 2.4 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max in its first three days – a particularly impressive feat for a new comedy series, which HBO has been actively investing in recently. The big question was whether that initial popularity would continue on streaming platforms, and the answer is a definite yes.
‘Rooster’ Is a Streaming Hit for HBO Max
As of today, the comedy series Rooster has consistently ranked third among the most-watched shows on HBO Max in the United States, according to Flix Patrol. This is a strong performance for a new comedy, especially given the talented people involved both in front of and behind the camera. Rooster was created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, with Lawrence also co-creating the popular Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. If you enjoyed Ted Lasso and its story of finding connection and family, you’ll likely enjoy Rooster as well.
The series stars Steve Carell as Greg Russo, a bestselling author who visits his daughter, Katie, played by Charly Clive, at a liberal arts college in New England after her fellow professor husband, Archie, portrayed by Ted Lasso‘s Phil Dunster, leaves her for a graduate student. Rooster not only follows the “complicated” relationship between Greg and his daughter, but how he handles an unexpected new position at the school. The show also stars Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard), John C. McGinley (Scrubs), and Lauren Tsai (Legion). Read the official logline:
This comedy series takes place at a college and focuses on the tricky relationship between a father (Steve Carell) and his daughter (Charly Clive).
Has Steve Carell Found His Next Big Comedy Hit?

HBO
Currently, the new show Rooster has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 45 critic reviews, and is officially “Certified Fresh.” With strong viewership numbers, it looks like Steve Carell may have found his next major comedy success. While he starred in the 2020 sci-fi comedy Space Force, that show was canceled after just two seasons on Netflix. It’s still early days, but if Rooster can capture even a bit of the popularity of Ted Lasso, HBO and Carell could be a perfect pairing that fans have been hoping for.
