Steam users have until May 17th at 10am Pacific Time / 1pm Eastern Time to try out the fantasy RPG GreedFall: The Dying World. It’s available as part of a Steam Free Weekend, so you won’t be able to keep the game after that date. However, a significant discount is also available during the promotion.
Sadly, this feels less like a game launch announcement and more like a goodbye. GreedFall: The Dying World, or GreedFall 2, was fully released in March 2026 after a period in Early Access, but it never really gained traction. Shortly after, the game’s developer, Spiders, was shut down by its publisher, Nacon. Spiders was also behind other games like GreedFall, Bound By Flame, The Technomancer, and SteelRising.

Nacon’s fantasy RPG, GreedFall 2, is currently available for a free weekend on Steam. This is different from Steam’s recent “Free-to-Keep” promotion, which lets you own a game forever – this free weekend only lasts until May 17th at 10am PT/1pm ET. If you enjoy the game, you can purchase it with a 30% discount (bringing the price down to $35) until May 27th.

GreedFall 2, officially titled GreedFall 2: The Dying World, isn’t a direct sequel to the original GreedFall—it’s actually a prequel. You don’t need to have played the first game to enjoy this one, as the story takes place entirely before the events of the original. In this installment, you play as a native of Teer Fradee who is kidnapped and taken to the Old Continent. Along with a team of companions, you’ll fight to find your way back home – and uncover other secrets along the way. For fans curious about the Old Continent mentioned frequently in the first game, this sequel provides a deeper look into that world. While the original GreedFall was praised for its similarities to classic BioWare games, the sequel hasn’t received the same level of critical acclaim.
Reviews for GreedFall 2 are generally mixed. It currently has a Metascore of 63 on MetaCritic and a 62% positive rating on Steam. The game leans more towards traditional, challenging RPGs than action-focused ones. While its story, world, and RPG elements are strong, it struggles with combat, gameplay, and performance issues. However, the game is currently free, and will be on sale throughout the month, making it a potentially good value if you’re interested.
Even though the circumstances around the release of GreedFall 2 are sad, and we miss having the development team still working, playing the game is a good way to honor Spiders and their final project.
