Once the Steam Machine is released, many games will already be confirmed to work perfectly with it, indicated by a green checkmark. Valve has assured developers that getting their games verified won’t be a difficult process.
Lawrence Yang, a designer at Valve, explained to Game Developer that getting a game ‘Verified’ for Steam Machines will be easier than getting it Verified for the Steam Deck. He stated that any game that’s already Verified on the Steam Deck will automatically be Verified on Steam Machines as well.
Valve tests games to see if they’ll work well on the Steam Deck, and those that pass receive a ‘Verified’ label. This doesn’t guarantee a perfect experience, but it means the game meets certain standards – like working with controllers, displaying correctly, and supporting necessary software.
Valve believes that any game working well on the Steam Deck will also work on the Steam Machine. They haven’t shared detailed technical specifications for verifying games on the Steam Machine beyond that.
Even if a game doesn’t have Steam Deck’s official ‘Verified’ status, you can often still play it. However, it might not run as smoothly or have all features working perfectly. For example, some games, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, were originally marked as ‘Verified’ but were later changed to ‘Playable’ because of graphics and performance problems.
During a conversation with Game Developer, Valve’s Yang explained that while the approval process for their Steam Frame VR headset will be adjusted, they will still conduct thorough testing and offer feedback to developers. Valve hasn’t revealed specific release dates or prices for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, only stating they are aiming for a 2026 launch.
