Star Wars’ Most Important Series Returns to Disney+ Charts as First Movie in 7 Years Opens

Now that a new season has begun, it’s no surprise The Mandalorian is once again popular on Disney+. According to the streaming tracker FlixPatrol, the show is currently the 9th most-watched program on Disney+ in the U.S. and ranks 11th globally.

It’s easy to see why The Mandalorian is popular again on Disney+, even though it hasn’t had a new episode in over three years. Fans are revisiting the adventures of Din Djarin and Baby Yoda, continuing their story beyond the end of Season 3.

The Mandalorian Remains the Cornerstone of Star Wars on Disney+

There are several reasons why The Mandalorian might be considered the most important Star Wars series yet. It was the first live-action Star Wars show and the first original series on Disney+. At the time, it wasn’t clear if fans would embrace a Star Wars show or a longer, separate story outside of the main Skywalker films, so its success was a big question mark.

And it was a success! The Mandalorian premiered in 2019, the same year as the final Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Since then, it’s become the most visible part of the Star Wars universe in popular culture, with the phrase “this is the way” becoming incredibly popular online.

Will The Mandalorian Ever Get a Fourth Season?

Despite the huge success of The Mandalorian, it’s uncertain what direction the series will take after The Mandalorian and Grogu. With the third season having finished some time ago, the show’s future remains unclear.

Favreau explained that the scripts weren’t ready for a movie as they were. They had too many characters, relied on viewers already knowing the TV show, and were setting up events for the Ahsoka series. The story focused on Grand Admiral Thrawn and continued a broader narrative.

Moving from directing episodes to a full movie felt like starting all over again, honestly. I really wanted to explore the dynamic between Din Djarin and Grogu – that classic tough warrior protecting a vulnerable kid is a story everyone understands, even if they haven’t seen The Mandalorian. But don’t worry, it’s still very much Star Wars through and through. We’re definitely hinting at where the larger story is heading, but I think you can still enjoy this as its own self-contained movie experience.

Fans of Star Wars are currently enjoying rewatching the first three seasons of The Mandalorian before the premiere of The Mandalorian and Grogu. You can stream The Mandalorian on Disney+ now, and The Mandalorian and Grogu will be in theaters on May 22nd.
