Next month, fans can explore the stunning artwork from the manga version of A New Hope. The first volume, The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope — The Manga, will be available in stores soon.

Dark Horse will release a new hardcover book on June 16, 2026, with a second volume coming in August. This book, The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope — The Manga, Vol. 1, features the original artwork from the 1997 manga adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope. It includes a new translation based directly on the original lettering. Fans can experience the classic Star Wars film in a fresh way, just before it returns to cinemas. The 184-page book costs $49.99.

New Star Wars Art Book Examines the Creation of the Original Manga

When George Lucas’s Star Wars premiered in 1977, it revolutionized science fiction movies. Characters like Han Solo and Princess Leia quickly became cultural icons, launching a hugely successful franchise that continues to grow with new releases. Surprisingly, the film also inspired a manga adaptation two decades later – something many fans may not know.

Hisao Tamaki, a celebrated artist, brought his distinctive style to Star Wars, letting fans experience the story in both film and comic book form. To create The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope — The Manga, Dark Horse carefully restored Tamaki-sensei’s original artwork, aiming to document and highlight a truly special piece of pop culture history.

This book, The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope—The Manga Volume 1, features detailed copies of the original artwork by Hisao Tamaki. It also includes a new English translation of the Japanese text, which was created based on the Japanese audio track of the movie.

Dark Horse’s Art of Star Wars Vol. 2 Includes Interview with Hisao Tamaki

Following the release of the first book in June, Dark Horse will publish the second and final hardcover volume on August 18th. This volume completes the story and, like the first, will be presented in the traditional right-to-left reading format. It will also feature a detailed interview with the writer and artist, Hisao Tamaki.

It’s currently unknown if Dark Horse will also release manga-style adaptations of other Star Wars stories. While the original trilogy was adapted into manga, different authors worked on each one.

The first volume of The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope — The Manga will be released by Dark Horse on June 16, 2026. The second and last volume will be available on August 18th.
