Sony has developed a new PlayStation controller with a unique feature: it can physically grip and release your fingers, changing how you interact with games.
Sony has recently filed patents for some unusual ideas that might appear in future PlayStation consoles. These include features like a “ghost” player who can beat difficult game sections for you, and artificial intelligence capable of automatically creating shareable video clips from your gameplay.
There are different kinds of game controllers available, even some with only a touchscreen – no buttons at all.
A new invention has been patented – a game controller where you can adjust the feel of the buttons, making them firmer or more sensitive.
Sony patents controller with buttons that can trap your fingers
Cheat Happens recently discovered plans for a new controller that uses magnets to adjust button resistance. This would allow the controller to change how easy or difficult buttons are to press depending on the game. For instance, the reload button might become harder to push, mimicking a jammed weapon.
It reminds me a lot of the cool adaptive triggers on the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller. You know, how they change how hard you have to press them depending on what’s happening in the game? It’s a really immersive feature, and this seems like it does something similar!

The patent also describes a cool feature where the buttons could change how firm they are. They’d be soft enough for a player’s finger to press in, then quickly become solid around it.
This design aims to make players feel truly held by the controller, requiring real physical effort to break free – ideal for moments when their character is grabbed or restrained in a game.
Just because Sony patented these features doesn’t guarantee they’ll be included in the PlayStation 6 or any upcoming consoles.
This suggests the company is exploring new ideas, similar to when they tested the fully squeezable controller.
