To really advance in Solarpunk, you’ll need to build and improve an airship. The first island gives you a good starting supply of materials, but eventually you’ll hit a wall if you’re limited to just iron, wood, stone, berries, sand, clay, and cotton – you’ll need more to craft everything you want.
Currently, you can improve your airship twice, bringing it up to level three. Each upgrade lets the airship fly farther, allowing you to access new islands and gather resources not available where you begin.
Unlocking the Airship
Okay, so once I got my research table built, I unlocked the ability to craft an airship dock! That meant I could finally build an airship and start heading to the trader bot and that little island just west of it. But here’s the frustrating part: you need an airship component to actually make the airship, and the game doesn’t tell you anything about how to get one! It’s a total mystery where to find or craft it.
Getting the part you need for your airship is pretty simple if you have the builder’s hammer and some wood. On the starting island, look towards the mountains for a column of smoke. That smoke shows where an airship has crashed, and you can find the component there. Use the builder’s hammer to create stairs that will let you climb the mountain to reach the crash site. You can’t jump up there directly – you’ll need the stairs to get high enough.
Upgrading the Airship
Once your airship is built, you can enhance it at the dock, but first you’ll need to obtain airship upgrades. These upgrades are exclusively available from the trader bot. The trader also offers blueprints and other useful items to improve your base, including crafting recipes that allow you to automate tasks like farming.
The trader bot offers trades in sets, and after completing each set, you’ll receive an airship upgrade. This upgrade improves how far your ship can travel from your dock. To get the first airship upgrade, you need to provide these items to the bot, in this specific order:
- 4x Watermelons, which gives you sprinklers
- 12x Cotton, which gives you a blueprint
- 20x Beeswax, which gives you another blueprint
- 10x more Watermelons, which gets you a third blueprint
- 32x Copper, which gives you the airship upgrade
You can improve your airship at the dock, which will unlock access to new islands. These islands contain the materials you’ll need to complete the next set of trades with the trader bot. To upgrade your airship a second time, give the trader bot the following items, in this order:
- 5x Silicon, which you get by putting quartz in the furnace, and you get a blueprint for turning it in
- 10x Wheat, which gives you a blueprint
- 20x Cloth, which gives you another blueprint
- 10x Bread, which gives you yet another blueprint
- 6x Eggs, which gives you the final airship upgrade
This upgrade unlocks all the remaining islands on the map. Currently, this is the only way to improve your airship. Because the game is still being developed, more upgrades might become available in later updates.
