Fans of the Adult Swim animated series Smiling Friends might be disappointed to learn it will end after its third season, despite being renewed for two more. Creators and stars Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel announced the decision in a video posted on February 26th, clarifying it wasn’t a joke. Cusack explained that both he and Hadel felt creatively exhausted after dedicating years to the show, but also proud of what they’d accomplished. They both agreed that ending the series after season three felt like the right choice.
Adult Swim fully supported the creators’ decision to take a break. According to Cusack, Adult Swim told them, “If you don’t feel like making the show right now, that’s okay. Take a break, and come back later if you want, or don’t.” They were also assured they could potentially create more episodes in the future if they chose to. Fans have just over a month to watch the last episodes of Smiling Friends. The final two episodes will air on April 12th, and Cusack describes them as extra episodes that weren’t originally part of season three, rather than a true series finale.
