A surprisingly common way to commit theft in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim involves putting a bucket over a character’s head. Interestingly, this wasn’t intentional – Bethesda, the game developer, never designed it to happen, but it emerged as a glitch players discovered and exploited.
The iconic method happened by accident
Bruce Nesmith, who worked for a long time at Bethesda Game Studios and led the design of Skyrim, recently appeared on the FRVR podcast. He revealed something surprising: the game developers never intentionally programmed NPCs to have buckets put on their heads. They also didn’t realize players could use this as a way to commit theft in the game.
That happened purely by chance, actually. We never intentionally included anything that would put a bucket on someone’s head while we were making the game. It only appeared after the game was released!
Nesmith says he understands why this happens, but it’s really just a funny result of all the work Bethesda put into making the game’s systems. The developers were amused to see videos of players stealing things – like wine and cheese – from characters who were distracted by buckets on their heads.
One of the things that makes Skyrim so captivating is its many immersive interactions. This has kept players interested in the game for years after it first came out. As Nesmith points out, Skyrim really makes you feel like you’re actually living in the world of Tamriel.
Developing a strong sense of self and freedom allows for personal growth, creating a feeling of groundedness – a realization of who you are and your place in the world. It’s about truly inhabiting your own identity.
Honestly, I was a little disappointed with Starfield’s world, according to what I’ve heard from Alex Nesmith. He basically said that space, as depicted in the game, just isn’t that thrilling, and a lot of that comes down to the planets feeling a bit samey since they’re mostly created by the game itself instead of being carefully designed.
