A man believed to be responsible for several robberies in Colorado was apprehended by television news teams while they were filming stories about him.
You know, it’s funny – sometimes when criminals think they’ve really pulled something off, they can’t help but brag about it. It’s like they want to taunt the police and federal agents who were after them. But then you get others who are totally different – they try to stay under the radar, basically hiding out so they don’t draw any attention to themselves.
On Friday, September 26th, a man believed to be responsible for several robberies in Idaho Springs, Colorado, committed a more serious crime.
So, there was this guy, Richard Applequist, and it was seriously weird. I was watching the news – they were doing these stories about him supposedly committing robberies – and I actually saw him walking right behind the CBS news crew while they were filming! It was so strange. Justin Adams, one of the anchors, literally did a double-take when he saw Applequist walking across the street behind them. I couldn’t believe it!

Robbery suspect caught by TV crews
Applequist, with his hood pulled up, didn’t appear to mind that the television cameras were focused on him.
However, the CBS crew and another person promptly called 911 to notify the police about Applequist being in the area. Shortly after, within 10 minutes, he was arrested by officers and taken into custody for questioning.
So, the police – both the deputies and the Idaho Springs Police – showed up really fast. They managed to find Applequist and arrest him, according to their report. It all happened pretty quickly, apparently.
Following a series of robberies that took place between September 23rd and 25th, a thorough search was initiated to locate the suspect.
A representative from the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office described the situation to CBS News as “amazing” because it’s rarely the case that suspects are present when the media arrive.
I was just as shocked as anyone to see Applequist there! Honestly, it was surreal. I remember thinking, and describing on live TV!
