The new Gladiator film is proving critics wrong. When Ridley Scott announced a sequel to his original, critically acclaimed movie – nearly 25 years later – some people objected. They felt the first film, which starred Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, was a complete story and didn’t need a follow-up.
Despite initial doubts, Gladiator II finally arrived in theaters in 2024, starring Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal. Connie Nielsen returned as Lucilla, and Denzel Washington joined the cast, bringing a lot of star power to the film. This combination of actors gave fans hope that the sequel would be at least enjoyable, and perhaps even receive positive reviews.
, and was very vocal about it, so that didn’t do Scott any favors.
After performing below expectations in cinemas, the movie is now a huge hit on Netflix, quickly climbing to the top two most-watched films in many countries worldwide.
Gladiator II Stunned Pedro Pascal, Dominating Netflix
Despite receiving generally positive reviews from critics (70% on Rotten Tomatoes) and even better scores from audiences (80%), Gladiator II wasn’t a huge financial success. While the film earned $462 million worldwide, its production cost of $310 million, plus significant marketing expenses, meant profits were limited.
Even Pascal, experienced with large-scale projects, was completely amazed while working on his first film directed by Ridley Scott.
Ridley Scott managed to create a set that exceeded all my previous experiences – it was truly the most incredible I’ve ever seen,” he told HOLA. “Everyone agreed, even those who had worked on his other films and major productions. Once we were filming in Rome and saw the elaborate sets, we were all amazed. In fact, we had to constantly remind the newcomers that this level of production wasn’t typical.
If you’re not familiar with his work, Ridley Scott also directed the original Alien film. However, he’s famously had disagreements – even with himself – about the direction of the entire Alien franchise.
Ridley Scott: Alien Angst Led to Gladiator II
Ridley Scott felt overlooked when James Cameron directed Aliens, the sequel to his film Alien, and wasn’t pleased with how the franchise evolved afterward. Because of this, he was determined that if a sequel to Gladiator was ever made, he would be the one to direct it.
Scott started explaining, “With Alien being my second film, I was already established in Hollywood, despite being relatively new to the movie industry. I was 40 years old and doing well enough to own my second Bentley – I wasn’t some inexperienced newcomer! I had offices in London, Hong Kong, New York, and Los Angeles, yet people were treating me like I was fresh off the bus. It was absurd. Over time, I learned to deal with that kind of condescension, and it actually helped me figure out how to respond. Even then, despite my age and limited film experience, I saw it as a positive opportunity.”
He explained that making his early films was a struggle. He had to pay for the initial script and spent a lot of money finishing The Duelists without receiving any payment. However, he felt like he’d overcome the biggest hurdle and was finally starting his career. At 40, he saw this as the beginning of a new chapter. He realized that if he’d been forced to stop filmmaking at that point, after just starting, he would have been lost.
He decided against pursuing those projects and instead revisited familiar territory, starting with the 2017 film Alien: Covenant. He then explored ancient Roman history with the 2023 movie Napoleon, featuring Joaquin Phoenix, which served as a lead-in to Gladiator II in 2024. Gladiator II is expected to be a big hit on Netflix this spring.
