Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe’s epic fantasy movie sprints to HBO Max’s top 10 charts.
I was so excited when Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe first teamed up for Gladiator! It was an amazing movie and totally deserved all the awards, especially Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell – he was incredible as Maximus. And it wasn’t just a one-time thing! They kept working together throughout the 2000s, making four more films together, like Body of Lies and American Gangster. It’s awesome to see such a strong creative partnership.
Their most recent project together was the 2010 action film Robin Hood, where Crowe played the famous outlaw. While the movie didn’t perform well in theaters, it’s recently found popularity on HBO Max.
The movie Robin Hood is currently number 7 on HBO Max’s list of the most popular movies in the U.S., beating out MacGruber and The Notebook. Currently, the top spot is held by If I Had Legs I Would Kick You, followed by The Smashing Machine, The Alabama Solution, Masterminds, and I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.
Despite initially underperforming in theaters 16 years ago – earning only $321.7 million on a budget of $155–237 million – the fantasy film is now finding success through streaming. While critics were divided, giving it a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were slightly more positive with a 58% score.
Reviewers thought the movie took the Robin Hood story too seriously, losing the lightheartedness of the original legend. Even so, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood still draws viewers when it appears on streaming services.
The recent popularity of Robin Hood stories across streaming platforms isn’t a surprise, given the enduring appeal of the legendary outlaw. We’re seeing this with shows like the MGM+ series starring Sean Bean and Jack Patten, which premiered in late 2025. Plus, A24 is releasing a grittier take on the legend, The Death of Robin Hood, featuring Hugh Jackman as a troubled Robin, haunted by his past crimes.
Many actors have played the famous hero Robin Hood, including Kevin Costner and Cary Elwes. Though most movie versions haven’t quite captured the spirit of the original story – even Russell Crowe’s – the legend remains popular and continues to resonate with audiences. Now, the 2010 film starring Crowe and Scott is gaining renewed attention thanks to streaming platforms.
