After nearly a century, Betty Boop is making a comeback to the movies! As reported by Variety on May 20th, Quinta Brunson will be developing and starring in a film about Betty Boop and her creative partnership with Max Fleischer. Originally conceived as a cartoon French poodle, Boop evolved into a lively and playful character inspired by Jazz Age singers and flappers – and became a cultural icon. You can still find her image on everything from cartoons and Broadway shows to souvenir t-shirts. Max Fleischer’s grandson shared that Quinta perfectly captures Betty’s spirit – her joy, intelligence, humor, confidence, and kindness – and that their connection was immediately apparent when the project was discussed.
Betty Boop, much like Barbie, was a groundbreaking character when she first appeared, becoming one of the earliest animated female stars in movies. Pairing her with Kate Brunson feels right – they both represent iconic status and star power. The only downside is that we have to wait to see this project come to life, but hopefully, it will be worth it – maybe even big enough for the Imax screen!
