According to Dutch authorities, a prank call reportedly made by YouTuber Rouand YT played a role in the events leading to a deadly shooting in Amsterdam on New Year’s Day.
In court on April 22nd, prosecutors stated that the suspect, Efe Y., received a phone call about 30 minutes before the shooting, directing him to meet at a “blue bridge” in Piet Wiedijkpark.
Prosecutors say the call happened through a common feature on the Rouand YT channel, where fans can donate money to request calls to numbers of their choosing during livestreams. Reports indicate a viewer paid around €5 for the streamer to prank call Efe Y. with a made-up story about being involved with gangs. Prosecutors believe this prank then led to a real-life meeting shortly before the shooting occurred.
YouTube prankster denies making the call
According to prosecutors, the suspect began shooting at three teenagers in the park, and they weren’t involved in the reason he was there.
Two Syrian teenagers staying in asylum centers were fatally shot, and another managed to escape. Dutch prosecutors told the court the teens were simply in the wrong location when the shooting happened, and there was no opportunity for a dispute or struggle beforehand.
Rouand YT is known for his frequent “Prankcalls & Chill” live streams, where he accepts donations from fans in exchange for calling their friends as a joke. Rouand YT insists he wasn’t involved in the prank call. He told AT5 he was surprised to hear about it and stated he wasn’t even broadcasting online that day, making it impossible for him to have made the call. He has been interviewed by prosecutors as a witness, not as someone they suspect of wrongdoing.
This situation has brought renewed focus to online livestreams where viewers pay to have creators harass specific people with prank phone calls. Prosecutors explained to the court that these calls can sometimes be very harsh, and the overall investigation into the shooting is still underway.
The next preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 8.
