Prime Video’s 8-Hour Detective Series With One Of Its Best Casts Can Only Get Better

Prime Video’s detective series has potential, drawing from a wealth of source material. Although the first season wasn’t a complete success, the show is likely to improve. Some TV shows and streaming series instantly captivate viewers, like Twin Peaks, Game of Thrones, and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. These shows quickly earned both popular and critical acclaim. However, other series take some time to develop and find their stride.

Many popular TV shows, like Parks and Recreation and the American version of The Office, had rough beginnings – even devoted fans suggest skipping their first seasons. BoJack Horseman on Netflix eventually became critically acclaimed, joining shows like The Wire and Breaking Bad, but its initial episodes were inconsistent and tonally confusing. So, the slow start of one of Prime Video’s more complex crime dramas doesn’t automatically mean it can’t improve and become a success.

Prime Video’s Scarpetta, based on Patricia Cornwell’s novels, features a stellar cast. Nicole Kidman stars as Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant but complex forensic pathologist. Simon Baker, known from The Mentalist, plays her husband, an FBI agent haunted by his past. Bobby Cannavale appears as Pete, Kay’s former partner who is now retired and married to her sister, played by Jamie Lee Curtis.

Scarpetta Season 1 Was Messy But Promising

The series already boasts a stellar cast, and it’s adding Broadway sensation Ariana DeBose as Lucy, Dorothy’s daughter. Lucy is grieving the recent loss of her wife, Janet, who is portrayed by Janet Montgomery. Interestingly, Janet lives on as an AI program that Lucy interacts with as if she were still alive, a behavior that becomes more concerning as the season progresses. But with the show adapting two of Patricia Cornwell’s novels at the same time, using a back-and-forth timeline, there are still plenty of new characters yet to be introduced.

Rosy McEwen stars as a young Kay Scarpetta in this series, tackling her first big case alongside Jake Cannavale, who plays a younger version of her future brother-in-law. Compared to Prime Video’s Cross, Scarpetta is a very ambitious show, attempting to weave together three storylines: a hunt for a serial killer thirty years in the past, a present-day investigation into a similar killer, and the complicated relationships within the Scarpetta family. Unfortunately, the first season doesn’t quite come together; instead of a carefully crafted story, it feels disorganized and confusing.

The show’s focus gets lost in too many family dramas, and confusing plot twists only make things worse. The addition of an unbelievable AI character, a random spaceship crash, and a largely unnecessary cult feel out of place. Luckily, the strong performances from the actors give the show a chance to improve in season 2, now that it’s been renewed.

Scarpetta Season 2 Could Improve The Show’s Formula

It’s entertaining to watch Curtis and Kidman argue over Lucy’s upbringing, but the second season of Scarpetta would be stronger if it focused more on Scarpetta investigating murders. The storyline about her niece moving out is a good step towards letting Kay concentrate on her work. However, her unexpected divorce is concerning, as it risks turning the season into a drawn-out romantic drama unless it’s resolved quickly.

Although the actors in Scarpetta are excellent, the show’s first season, which jumped between two different time periods, wasn’t entirely successful. By combining the storylines of both the first Scarpetta novel, Postmortem (1990), and Autopsy (2021), the show struggled to fully establish itself in either time. Because characters like Pete, Lucy, and Dorothy were present in the current timeline, viewers knew they would survive the past storyline’s investigation, which significantly reduced the suspense.

Scarpetta Season 1’s Mixed Reviews Are A Blessing In Disguise

Critics weren’t impressed with the first season of Scarpetta, giving it a score of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, and viewers rated it even lower at 43%. Surprisingly, this might not be a complete failure for the show. Prime Video’s Reacher had a fantastic first season that received a lot of praise, making it difficult for any follow-up series to live up to that success.

However, Scarpetta has a lot of potential for improvement. The first season was weighed down by a large cast, several unrelated storylines, and a complicated time structure that ultimately hurt the narrative. Despite these issues, the show features a strong ensemble cast, and there’s a wealth of source material in the existing Scarpetta novels to draw from for future seasons. Similar to shows like Reacher and Cross, Scarpetta could enjoy a long run if it continues to adapt the author’s books.

The creators of Scarpetta might actually benefit from the negative reviews season one received. Those reviews set expectations low enough that viewers won’t be surprised if season two has similar issues. While it will be challenging to regain viewers’ trust after a rocky start, many shows have successfully recovered from weak first seasons.

Now that the actors have great chemistry and there’s plenty of material from the books, season 2 of Scarpetta could be really good if it simplifies the plot and concentrates on the basic story. Essentially, Scarpetta is about a woman with personal struggles who solves crimes, even though it impacts her family. If the Prime Video series remembers this central idea, season 2 can still be a success despite the issues with the first season.
