Despite some concerns, the Pirates of the Caribbean films continued to make a lot of money, leading to a fourth movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Blackbeard Is One Of The Franchise’s Best Villains

The Pirates of the Caribbean movies often get overlooked when discussing great villains, but they really deliver. Captain Barbossa’s transformation into a hero doesn’t diminish how good he was as a villain in the original film. Davy Jones still looks impressive thanks to the special effects, and his performance is genuinely fun to watch. Cutler Beckett is perfectly hateable, and even the fifth movie introduced a strong villain in Captain Salazar, played convincingly by Javier Bardem.

Ian McShane’s portrayal of Captain Blackbeard is truly memorable, placing him among the most iconic pirate characters. The character’s legendary status and Jack’s introduction of him as the most feared pirate instantly create a sense of danger. McShane’s powerful performance reinforces this, making Blackbeard a formidable presence. Every time he appears, he effectively scares both the characters and the audience, making him a unique and compelling villain.

What’s particularly compelling about the film is that Blackbeard is so focused on avoiding his predicted death. Despite being a terrifying villain capable of battling Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa, his fear of death is his greatest weakness. This flaw makes him a more believable and complex character. Combined with his difficult relationship with his daughter and first mate, Angelica, Blackbeard becomes a truly fascinating character to watch.

Jack’s Relationship With Angelica Is A Highlight

Penélope Cruz’s character, Angelica, has a complicated past with both Captain Blackbeard and Jack Sparrow. Her arrival in the movie is particularly clever. The story starts with rumors of someone pretending to be Jack Sparrow, building a crew – and the surprise reveal that this imposter is a woman is a great twist. This instantly establishes Angelica as Jack’s equal, capable of challenging him in intelligence and combat.

Angelica adds an exciting and mystical element to the Pirates of the Caribbean films with her use of witchcraft and voodoo. Though often overlooked when discussing the series’ best characters, she’s a fascinating addition. Her shifting loyalties—will she help her father or side with Jack Sparrow?—make her a perfect fit for the franchise, as you’re never quite sure where she stands. This untrustworthy nature is exactly what allows her to thrive in the world of pirates.

I always loved the dynamic between Angelica and Jack. Up until then, Jack had brief relationships, nothing really lasting. Elizabeth was a connection, but her heart was always with Will. But with Penélope Cruz, Johnny Depp just had incredible chemistry! You could feel this underlying romance in every scene, making their conversations so captivating. Honestly, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides isn’t the best in the series, but I think it’s a really underrated film.
