Ryan Gosling is a highly respected actor in Hollywood, so it surprised many when he was removed from the cast of the 2009 film The Lovely Bones. The director is now explaining the reasons behind that decision.
Ryan Gosling was originally cast in the film adaptation of The Lovely Bones as the father of Saoirse Ronan’s character. However, he was later let go from the project after deliberately gaining sixty pounds for the role without discussing it with director Peter Jackson. At the Cannes Film Festival, Jackson addressed the situation, taking full responsibility for the decision to remove Gosling from the film, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Peter Jackson: Ryan Gosling Getting Recast Is Not His Fault
I’m not going to name any specific actors involved, as it’s a private matter and not their responsibility. When we have to replace an actor, it’s always our mistake – we didn’t choose the right person for the role in the first place. It has nothing to do with the actor’s performance. I won’t discuss individual cases, but it’s important to understand that if a recast happens, we made the wrong initial choice and we take full responsibility for that.
You know, as a film lover, I always feel like a movie’s success really comes down to chemistry. The director put it perfectly – it’s not just what you see on screen, but how everyone – the actors, the crew – clicks together. It’s about how an actor connects with the story, embodies a character, and ultimately connects with us, the audience. Making a film is this incredibly complex process of getting everyone to gel, and you spend so much time planning and casting, hoping you get that right mix. But honestly, sometimes even with all that effort, things just don’t quite click, and you learn from those mistakes.
Ryan Gosling Gained 60 Pounds for Nothing
It seems Jackson is implying that Ryan Gosling simply didn’t have the right on-screen connection for the role. He also suggests Gosling’s weight wasn’t the reason another actor, Mark Wahlberg, ended up with the part. This differs from what Gosling told The Hollywood Reporter in 2010, when he said he and the filmmakers had different visions for the character’s appearance.
Gosling had expected to weigh 210 pounds for the role, but a lack of communication with the director during pre-production led to a misunderstanding. He explained that with such a large-scale film, the director wasn’t able to focus on individual actors’ needs. Gosling arrived on set having miscalculated his weight, resulting in him being overweight and, ultimately, out of a job.
When The Lovely Bones was released, it received mixed reviews, with only 31% positive ratings from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, the film received recognition at the Academy Awards, with Stanley Tucci nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Saoirse Ronan also won an award for Best Leading Actress at the Irish Film and Television Awards. The movie was a commercial success, earning over $93 million worldwide on a budget of $65 million.
Ryan Gosling has had a remarkably successful career since leaving the film The Lovely Bones. He’s received Oscar nominations for his work in Half Nelson, La La Land, and Barbie, and his latest movie, Project Hail Mary, could earn him another nomination. Next, he’ll star in Star Wars: Starfighter, a large-scale franchise film directed by Shawn Levy, scheduled for release in 2027.
