Daisy Ridley’s Action Film Becomes Streaming Hit 1 Year Later

I really enjoyed watching Daisy Ridley in last year! She totally reminded me of Bruce Willis, and the movie had that same exciting feel as Die Hard. It didn’t do amazingly in theaters, but now that it’s on streaming, a lot more people are discovering it, and I’m glad I did!

The movie Cleaner is currently a huge hit on Prime Video around the world, according to data from FlixPatrol. It’s the No. 1 movie in Brazil, Portugal, and the Dominican Republic. It’s also gaining popularity in countries like Italy, Ecuador, and Paraguay. However, it’s not currently available on Prime Video in the United States, where you can stream it on HBO Max instead.

Cleaner Didn’t Get the Box Office Success It Deserves

The British film first came out in U.S. cinemas last February, and then in the UK in May 2025. Despite a $25 million budget, it didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $1.3 million globally. Reviews from critics were also divided, with a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, many viewers enjoyed the film, with audience reviews frequently calling it “very entertaining” and praising Ridley’s performance as the lead actor.

Martin Campbell, who directed action movies like GoldenEye and Casino Royale, helmed Cleaner. The film stars Ridley as Joey Locke, an ex-soldier who now cleans windows on skyscrapers in London. When terrorists seize control of a skyscraper during a gala, taking hundreds hostage, Locke finds himself in the middle of the crisis.

Joey finds herself in a dangerous situation: trapped on the outside of a building on a cleaning platform while her autistic brother is inside with the hostages. Using her military background and familiarity with the building, she fights to get back inside and stop the terrorists. The story shares similarities with the movie Die Hard, focusing on a single hero battling a crisis in a skyscraper.

Daisy Ridley Is a “Damn Good Actress” in Cleaner

When working with the actors, I always welcomed their input. With Daisy, we’d discuss the scenes each morning. She consistently offered ideas to ensure everyone understood her character’s perspective, as she was in nearly half the film, often sitting in the cradle while chaos unfolded around her. She was trying so hard to get inside, and portraying that fear and the intense action happening nearby required a truly talented actress to make it believable.

The film stars Ridley in the main role, alongside Clive Owen (known from Closer) as Marcus Blake, the head of the environmental activist group responsible for the hostage situation. The cast also includes actors from popular shows and films like One Piece, Ruth Gemmell (EastEnders), Ray Fearson (His Dark Materials), Howard Charles (Whitstable Pearl), Rufus Jones (Camping), Lee Boardman (Jack the Giant Slayer), and Richard Hope (Poldark).

Cleaner is streaming on HBO Max in the United States.
