The dispute between the former leaders of Subnautica’s developer, Unknown Worlds, and its publisher, Krafton, is continuing. Recent court filings from Subnautica’s director and designer Charlie Cleveland, Unknown Worlds co-founder Max McGuire, and former CEO Ted Gill claim that Krafton executives used artificial intelligence in an attempt to avoid paying a $250 million bonus. This bonus was tied to Subnautica 2 reaching specific financial targets.
Recent legal filings reveal conversations between Krafton CEO Kim Chang-han and Richard Yoon, the company’s global operations head. These discussions, uncovered during the legal process, suggest Kim explored ways to avoid paying a previously agreed-upon sum. According to Kotaku, he even consulted ChatGPT for advice, which reportedly indicated canceling the payment would be challenging.
The founders claimed Krafton wouldn’t share records of conversations with ChatGPT and stated these records were gone. However, messages between Kim and Yoon indicate that Krafton’s difficulty in lowering the bonus payout led Yoon to suggest acquiring Unknown Worlds as a simpler solution than negotiating better terms.
So, the legal battle between Krafton and the people who used to run the studio is still going on. At first, Krafton claimed the old team rushed to release Subnautica 2 into early access just to get a bonus, but they had to drop that claim when they couldn’t back it up. Now, they’re saying the founders illegally downloaded confidential files and kept company devices. It’s a weird situation because Krafton is using this as the reason they were fired, even though they didn’t discover it until after the firing. It all feels a bit messy, honestly.
Krafton announced it’s prioritizing artificial intelligence, but the developers of Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds, have confirmed the game won’t use AI to generate content.
Subnautica 2 is expected to hit early access in 2026 on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
