The Nintendo Switch has officially surpassed one of Nintendo’s oldest and most enduring sales records.
The Nintendo DS was a huge hit when it came out in 2004. It was innovative for its time, featuring two screens and touch controls when most handheld games were much simpler. This proved to be a great decision, as the DS has sold over 154 million units worldwide, making it Nintendo’s best-selling console for many years.
The Nintendo Switch has become Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, exceeding the sales of both the Game Boy (118.69 million units) and the Wii (101.63 million units). Nintendo’s 2025 financial report confirms the Switch has finally surpassed the DS, which previously held the top spot for many years.
Nintendo Switch becomes Nintendo’s top selling console
As of December 31, 2025, the Nintendo Switch had sold 155.37 million units globally. This means it’s sold just over 1 million more units than the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million.
Because of this success, the Switch is now Nintendo’s best-selling console of all time, showing how much fans love this unique handheld/home system.

The report also includes information about the Nintendo Switch 2. It has sold 17.37 million units to date. Although that’s lower than previous consoles, it hasn’t been available as long, so it’s natural it hasn’t reached the same level of sales. Considering the Wii U sold 13.56 million and the Nintendo 3DS sold 75.94 million, the Switch 2 is performing reasonably well.
The Nintendo Switch’s success shows just how loved it is by gamers. Its unique ability to be played both on the go and at home has kept it popular for years, leading to strong and consistent sales. Now being Nintendo’s best-selling console ever proves that focusing on handheld gaming is still a winning strategy for many fans.
