Nintendo announced strong sales for its new Switch 2 console, selling 10.36 million units in the first two quarters since its release. Recent numbers show that Nintendo sold 4.54 million Switch 2 consoles just in the last three months.
To give you an idea of how well the new Switch 2 is doing, it’s sold over double the amount of the original Switch in its first two months (4.7 million units). It’s also surpassed the launch sales of both the PlayStation 4 (7.5 million units) and PlayStation 5 (7.8 million units) in their first two quarters. Because of these strong sales, Nintendo now expects to sell 19 million Switch 2 consoles this year, a significant increase from their initial prediction of 15 million. If Nintendo meets this revised goal, the Switch 2 will have outsold the original Switch, PS4, and PS5 during their respective launch years.
Since its launch in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has sold 154.01 million units, almost matching the lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS (154.02 million). While Switch sales are down 60% compared to last year, Nintendo expects it to surpass the DS by the end of the financial year, making it the best-selling Nintendo console ever.
Mario Kart World, a launch title for the Switch 2, has quickly become a huge success, selling 9.57 million copies so far. It’s outselling the previous Mario Kart game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 92% of Switch 2 owners also owning this new title. A large portion of these sales – around 8.1 million – came from bundles that included the game with the Switch 2 console. Other popular titles include Donkey Kong Bananza, which has sold 3.49 million copies since its release in July, and Mario Party Jamboree on the Switch 2, with 1.16 million units sold.
Nintendo is planning a great holiday season with several exciting game releases. This month, players can look forward to Kirby Air Riders and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Then, in December, the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will finally be available.
