Netflix is known for its captivating murder mysteries, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of one particular hit. Thankfully, the show starring Emma Myers is almost back after a popular first season that aired nearly two years ago. It’s based on the novels by Holly Jackson and brought to life by adaptation from Poppy Cogan, with Dolly Wells directing.
The second season of A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder will be available on Netflix starting May 27th, giving viewers a chance to revisit the first season beforehand. The show quickly became a huge success on Netflix after its release in August 2024, attracting nearly 33 million viewers and totaling 148 million hours of watch time. But what is it about A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder that makes it so captivating?
A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Makes The Audience Care About Everyone
A mystery is only compelling if we’re invested in both the detective and the person they’re investigating. The details of how an investigation unfolds matter less than who it’s about.
Pip Fitz-Amobi is a bright and determined teenager living in Little Kilton, England, but she’s fixated on a cold case: the murder of Andie Bell, which happened five years prior. Though the case was closed with a confession from Andie’s boyfriend, Sal Singh, who later died by suicide, Pip believes Sal wasn’t the killer.
Pip keeps replaying the day she met Andie, and then telling Sal where Andie was. What makes Pip so interesting isn’t just her smarts, but her strong sense of right and wrong and her emotional depth, which are at the heart of the story.
This isn’t your typical teen mystery. It dives into difficult issues like fairness, unhealthy fixations, and what people are willing to sacrifice to prove a point. Pip starts a school project that quickly turns risky when she realizes the truth about who’s responsible is hidden within her own circle of friends and family.
When Pip brings Sal’s younger brother, Ravi, into the investigation to clear Sal’s name, the stakes get much higher. What started as straightforward interviews quickly turned into something far more dangerous, uncovering a hidden world of drug use, family secrets, and secret relationships.
The story moves quickly and efficiently, focusing entirely on solving Andie Bell’s murder without any unnecessary scenes or delays. The first season culminates in a surprising ending that changes how you view everything that happened previously.
The show’s brief season length was perfect. It encouraged viewers to watch another episode, creating a quick and easy binge – easily finished in under six hours.
What Will Happen In A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Season 2?
The first season of the show was based on the first book in the series. Season two of A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder will cover the story from the second book, Good Girl, Bad Blood.
After finally cracking the Andie Bell mystery, I was really hoping to put all that behind me and just… not get involved in any more investigations, ever. I was determined to move on, and things were actually going well with Ravi – we became a couple during all that craziness. But honestly, peace and quiet didn’t last very long.
When Jamie Reynolds, the brother of Pip’s friend Connor, vanishes during a local memorial event, Pip is pulled back into the hidden, darker side of Little Kilton. Meanwhile, Max Hastings, who was exposed for crimes against women in the first season, is now on trial in Season 2.
Pip’s search for Jamie leads her to become much more determined and confident. Unlike her cautious approach in the first season, she now understands her own abilities and is willing to take risks and even break the rules. This makes her a more complex and intense character in Season 2, creating a lot more suspense for viewers.
I’m really excited about the new cast members joining the show! Eden H. Davies, who I loved in Tell Me Everything, is playing Jamie – her disappearance is apparently the big mystery this season. And Jack Rowan, who was great in Noughts+ Crosses, is coming on as Pip’s new neighbor, Charlie Green, and he gets right in the thick of things as the investigation develops.
Asha Banks, Yali Topol Margalith, and Jude Morgan-Collie are all returning to their roles as Cara Ward, Lauren Gibson, and Connor Reynolds, respectively. Excitingly, Holly Jackson, the author of the book series, will be co-writing the script this season alongside Cogan, ensuring the new season closely follows the story in the novel.
This adaptation won’t shy away from the more challenging parts of the story. In fact, Jackson has promised this season will be even more intense and darker than the last one.
A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Fills A Teen Mystery Void
Emma Myers truly shines in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, playing a determined and smart young woman who quickly wins viewers over.
Jenna Myers brings a seriousness to her character, making the show more than just typical teen drama and helping it appeal to a wide range of viewers. Importantly, A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder steps in to fill a void left by the conclusion of many popular young adult series over the past ten years.
Popular teen mystery shows like Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and School Spirits have either ended or moved on, and even series like Euphoria and 13 Reasons Why have shifted away from high school settings. This left a real gap in the teen mystery genre. Luckily, A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder is a welcome and genuinely good addition to the mix.
The first season of A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder was a hit, captivating viewers with its exciting mystery, charming romance, and unexpected turns. Fans have been eagerly awaiting Season 2 for a couple of years, and it’s likely Emma Myers will once again deliver a compelling performance.
