Netflix hasn’t had much success with superhero shows, but they recently released a fantastic series in 2024 that hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. Fans may remember Netflix’s earlier Marvel shows, which featured memorable performances by Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and explored a grounded, street-level corner of the Marvel Universe.
As much as I loved seeing Marvel expand, they really seemed to hit a wall when they started trying to build out the MCU on TV. We got a few promising shows based on the comics – I really enjoyed I Am Not Okay With This, and Jupiter Ascending had potential – but sadly, Marvel just kept cancelling them after only one season. It’s frustrating as a fan because you get invested, then it’s just… gone.
Netflix saw success with The Umbrella Academy, which kept viewers engaged for four seasons. However, after it ended, the streaming service lacked a similar hit. Then, in 2024, Supacell premiered and was a critical success, proving popular enough to avoid cancellation and earn a second season quickly.
Supacell Is A Spectacular Original Superhero Series
Unlike typical superhero shows, Supacell is a fresh series created by Rapman, a British rapper and filmmaker known for his previous short films. The show centers around a diverse group of heroes who suddenly develop powers around the same time. What unites them is that they are all Black and live in South London, despite otherwise having little in common.
Over six episodes, the series follows the separate lives of several characters. Their paths eventually cross, and as they learn more about where their powers came from, a dangerous corporation starts to interfere, creating new problems.
Supacell Combines Some Of The Best Elements Of Superhero Shows
Though Supacell is a new series, it feels familiar because it borrows successful ideas from other superhero shows. Like The Boys, it focuses on ordinary people who gain powers, and often struggle with how to use them, offering a realistic and sometimes harsh look at the consequences.
Despite the challenges, the story has an optimistic side, focusing on Michael Lasaki-Brown, who can travel through time. He’s determined to alter the future, become a hero, and save people. This feels very much like the show Heroes, where Peter Petrelli attempted to unite other heroes to prevent a disastrous future.
The show’s success clearly benefited from learning from popular series with dedicated fans. It quickly rose to the top 10 globally after its release, and this popularity led to a second season being greenlit.
Supacell’s Creator Has A Three-Season Plan For Netflix
Netflix has had a tough time with sci-fi shows, often canceling promising series despite their popularity. Luckily, Supacell proved to be an exception! Less than six weeks after its release, Netflix announced it would be back for a second season.
As a big fan, I’m thrilled the show’s doing so well! Rapman, the creator, already has a vision for three seasons, which puts season 2 in a tricky spot. It needs to hook both existing fans and new viewers, and most importantly, convince Netflix that it’s worth giving us that final, third season – unless Rapman decides he wants to keep the story going beyond his original plan, of course!
Despite not getting the attention it deserves, Supacell is a really good show and a fresh take on the superhero genre, which is currently filled with predictable options.
