The Apple TV+ show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is back for a second season, expanding on the story behind the world of Godzilla and Kong – known as the MonsterVerse. While Godzilla and Kong have battled in other movies and shows, their fights usually end without a clear winner. Now, fans are getting an explanation for why Godzilla often seems to hold back.
Just before the season two finale, Godzilla surprised viewers by letting another giant creature, Titan X, live, even though he’d defeated it. This decision has a reason behind it, and it clarifies why Godzilla has fought Kong the way he has in the past. It’s a move that feels consistent with the entire history of the Godzilla franchise, particularly when he battles more otherworldly monsters.
Godzilla Doesn’t Fight Monarch’s Newest Titan in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2
The next-to-last episode sees the massive Titanus X lured to Skull Island, with Godzilla close behind. This island is famous as the home of Kong, and at this point in the story, Godzilla and Kong haven’t battled each other yet. This is because the events happen before the movie Godzilla vs. Kong, which marked their first official fight.
The movie doesn’t feature a big fight between Kong and Godzilla, and surprisingly, there isn’t much of a battle between Godzilla and Titan X either, even after Titan X arrives on Skull Island. The human characters are puzzled by this, initially thinking Godzilla isn’t afraid of anything. However, the lack of fighting isn’t about fear—it’s about what each monster is trying to achieve.
Mari Yamamoto’s character, Keiko, explains that Godzilla’s plan involved bringing Titan X to Skull Island to restore a natural order. She believes Titan X belonged in that environment and only became a threat when taken away. Once Titan X returned to Skull Island, it no longer saw Godzilla as an enemy.
Godzilla was awakened in the eighth episode specifically to defeat Titan X, who had strayed from its normal route. Their battle was interrupted when Titan X needed to protect its stolen egg, leading it to Skull Island.
Once Godzilla understood his location, he left the fight, feeling his goal was achieved. This new location offered a path to return Titan X to Axis Mundi. Understanding this explains his actions and also sheds light on his rivalry with Kong in future events.
There Is a Reason Godzilla Doesn’t Kill Kong in the MonsterVerse
Currently, Kong is the clear standout, mirroring the long-standing rivalry between the two creatures in real life. Both Kong and Godzilla are arguably the most famous giant monsters ever created, a fact highlighted by the 1960s film King Kong vs. Godzilla. In that movie, Kong was depicted as being as large as Godzilla – and that’s also true in the modern MonsterVerse films.
Godzilla has fought many foes, including King Ghidorah, but Kong is his most frequent opponent. Their first major battle in Godzilla vs. Kong saw Godzilla win decisively, but surprisingly, he chose to let Kong live, even though he could have easily killed him. This act suggests their conflicts are more than just simple rivalry and reveals a deeper connection between the two titans.
Godzilla acts as a guardian of Earth’s natural order, stepping in to control other giant creatures, or Titans, using force when needed. Though he may seriously injure Titans that become disruptive or challenge him, he almost never kills them. He believes each Titan has a role to play, and his displays of power are meant to remind them of their place and restore balance.
Seeing that Titan X had left foreign lands, he realized she no longer posed an immediate danger to humans. This explains why, in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kong is far from his home in Hollow Earth or Skull Island – he’s out of his usual territory.
Okay, so it turns out Kong hanging out on the surface, challenging Godzilla, wasn’t just a random fight! It was actually a clever plan to get Godzilla to follow him down to Hollow Earth. They figured out how Godzilla thinks – he’s all about keeping things balanced – and used that against him. Honestly, it worked flawlessly! It was so cool to see that strategy play out.
Godzilla Is Built to Combat Alien Threats
I’ve always been fascinated by Godzilla in the MonsterVerse. He’s not some simple hero who’s automatically on our side, and I think a lot of people misunderstand him. He’s really a guardian of the natural world, striving to keep things in balance. So, when he does things that seem dangerous to us, it’s not out of malice – it’s just him trying to fulfill that purpose. We just don’t always understand what he’s trying to achieve.
Godzilla isn’t just tasked with keeping other Titans in check; he naturally opposes any creatures that enter his territory. This is clear in Godzilla (2014), the first film in the MonsterVerse (followed by Kong: Skull Island in 2017), where he battles the M.U.T.O.s. These creatures were direct invaders, and Godzilla is specifically designed to be rivals with the three-headed King Ghidorah.
The M.U.T.O.s and Ghidorah weren’t natural creatures like Godzilla; they were alien invaders, immediately triggering Godzilla’s instincts to eliminate them. Because Godzilla is also a dominant Titan, he’s unaffected by Ghidorah’s attempt to control other Titans with his ‘Alpha Call’.
As a huge monster movie fan, it’s always cool to see how Godzilla reclaims his place as the alpha. Once he wins against whatever’s challenging him, the other Titans, like Rodan, quickly fall back into line – it just restores the natural order, you know? It’s fascinating to me that even something like the ORCA device from King of the Monsters, which tries to control the Titans with their own calls, feels wrong to Godzilla. He instantly sees it as an artificial disruption to the world, which explains why he’s so focused on destroying it. He’s all about balance!
I’m really worried about these M.U.T.O.s. They’re not like your typical aliens, more like parasites that invade and feed. What’s terrifying is they crave radiation, and they reproduce rapidly by absorbing it, which could lead to a global disaster. That’s why we need to stop them at all costs! They’re a completely different kind of threat than Godzilla – they actively create instability and put everything at risk in a way he just doesn’t.
These creatures are an old enemy of Godzilla’s kind, and he instinctively hunts them. However, unlike other Titans like Titan X from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Godzilla doesn’t see them as threats to eliminate. He’ll fight them, but ultimately allows them to live, recognizing their important role in the MonsterVerse’s balance of nature.
