Michaela Coel, the creator of I May Destroy You, is set to remake the classic Jean-Claude Van Damme film Bloodsport with A24, according to Variety. Coel expressed her long-standing admiration for fighters and the dedication required in their sport, stating she’s thrilled to delve into this world with A24. She enthusiastically added, “LET’S GO!”
The movie Bloodsport follows U.S. Army Captain Frank Dux as he competes in the Kumite, a secret martial arts tournament held in Hong Kong. It’s currently unknown how closely the new version, led by Michaela Coel, will follow the original story. We also don’t know if Coel will play the fighter herself, or if the film will introduce a new actor with a background in MMA or professional wrestling. These are just some initial ideas being considered.
Michaela Coel is working with A24 for the third time recently. She’s currently creating the miniseries First Day on Earth, where she’s the writer, co-director, star, and executive producer. She’s also appearing alongside Anne Hathaway in A24’s Mother Mary, a thriller about a relationship between pop star Mary (Hathaway) and fashion designer Sam (Coel). Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff are collaborating on the music for the film, which will be released on April 17th.
