The upcoming movie reboot now has a confirmed title. Plus, two major stars will be playing the lead roles.
The new movie is officially called Miami Vice ’85. Michael B. Jordan, known for his role in Sinners, will star alongside Austin Butler (from Elvis) as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett, respectively. Joseph Kosinski, who directed F1 and Top Gun: Maverick, is directing. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2027, and filming will begin later this year.
The OG Miami Vice Pilot Inspired the New Movie
The new movie, Miami Vice ’85, written by Dan Girloy, aims to capture the exciting yet seedy atmosphere of 1980s Miami. It’s based on the original, influential Miami Vice television series, drawing inspiration from the show’s pilot and first season, which had a major impact on pop culture, fashion, and filmmaking.
Miami Vice aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989 and followed detectives Rico and Sonny as they went undercover to bust smugglers, arms dealers, and other criminals in South Florida. More than just a typical police show, Miami Vice was groundbreaking for its time, known for its distinctive, movie-like look and realistic portrayal of crime.
So, Miami Vice has seen a movie reboot before, and honestly, it’s a bit complicated. If you remember the iconic 80s show, Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson were Rico and Tubbs. Then, in 2006, Michael Mann gave us a big-screen version with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. But things got interesting recently – I was hearing whispers that Michael B. Jordan was potentially joining Glen Powell (from the upcoming Twisters) for a new take on the story, specifically to play Sonny Crockett.
Austin Butler Co-Stars Alongside Michael B. Jordan
Michael B. Jordan recently achieved EGOT status this year, adding the final award to his collection, but he’s been a prominent Hollywood actor for quite some time. He first gained recognition with his role in the 2013 film Fruitvale Station, and then became even more famous as the lead in the Creed movies, which continue the story of the Rocky series. Jordan, who was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2020, has also appeared in popular films like Black Panther, Just Mercy, and Fantastic Four.
Austin Butler first gained widespread recognition for his role as Tex Watson in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He then powerfully portrayed Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic Elvis, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Since then, he’s appeared in films like The Bikeriders, Dune: Part Two, and Caught Stealing, and also starred in the Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air.
Miami Vice ’85 will be released in movie theaters on Aug. 6, 2027.
