Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 7
The second season of “Daredevil: Born Again” is building to a dramatic climax as the conflict between Daredevil and Mayor Fisk comes to a head. In a recent development, Jessica Jones has officially joined Daredevil’s fight, and her appearance has also uncovered important details about Luke Cage.
Although Luke Cage is also a hero like Daredevil and, like in the comic books, is believed to be the father of Jessica’s child, he hasn’t appeared in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. However, episode 7 reveals what Luke has been up to during all the recent trouble in New York, and it ties him to a significant villain from Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Luke Cage’s situation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is turning out to be more complex and potentially grim than many fans anticipated. It appears his current path is a direct result of the unresolved storyline and cliffhanger ending of the second season of his Netflix series, which was left unfinished when the show was cancelled, along with the other Marvel shows from Netflix.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Confirms Luke Cage Is Working Overseas
The seventh episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 reveals what Luke Cage has been up to, and the details are quite unexpected.
In episode 7, Jessica Jones confronted Mr. Charles after he sent a team to her home in episode 6. She questioned him about his connections to both the CIA and Valentina Alegra de Fontaine, a figure known from the Thunderbolts series.
During a heated conversation, Jones discovers that Luke has been secretly working for Charles on international assignments, likely involving classified government missions referred to as “The Lord’s work.”
Jessica turned down Charles’ job offer, but Luke apparently didn’t. This explains why Luke isn’t around currently and sets up Mike Colter’s return as Luke Cage in the third season of Daredevil: Born Again, which Marvel Studios is already filming. It’s also possible that Luke using his powers for secret government missions is connected to a deeper, ongoing situation – something he may have been facing since the end of season 2 of Luke Cage.
Has Luke Cage Been Caught In A Dark MCU Arc Since His Show Ended?
It’s interesting to revisit the ending of Luke Cage Season 2 from eight years ago, as it might explain what’s currently happening with Luke Cage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the final moments of the Luke Cage series, Mariah Dillard intentionally left Luke her nightclub, Harlem’s Paradise, before she died. She knew this would put him in a difficult position, forcing him to manage Harlem’s criminal underworld to keep the peace and prevent things from getting worse. Because of this, a third season of Luke Cage was planned to show Luke grappling with this change, essentially becoming a powerful crime boss himself.
Luke Cage’s recent shift towards more morally gray areas seems to have resulted in him taking on a government job abroad, where he’s once again willing to do what it takes to protect his family – Jessica and their daughter, Danielle. While we may eventually find out what happened with the club he unexpectedly came into possession of, his new position feels like a logical continuation of the darker path hinted at earlier, a path we never fully explored.
No matter what the future holds, it will be really interesting to find out what Luke Cage has been up to since his appearances in the old Marvel Netflix series.
The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again begins streaming May 5th on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
