We’ve all read quotes that make us cringe, wondering how anyone could say something so awful. But sometimes, it turns out those quotes are from a different era. Lisa Kudrow, who starred on Friends, recently shared that while she loved working with her castmates, the show’s writing staff often behaved inappropriately. In an interview with The Times of London, Kudrow revealed that the writers’ room was dominated by men who were disrespectful to the female cast members, often insulting them for minor mistakes. She described instances where writers would lash out with harsh and vulgar language if a line wasn’t delivered perfectly in front of the live studio audience. Kudrow also shared that the male writers would frequently discuss their sexual fantasies about Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, creating a very uncomfortable and intense atmosphere.
Courteney Cox acknowledged the intense work environment on Friends, recalling that the writers – primarily men – often worked until 3am. She said she didn’t care what people said about her privately, as long as it meant the show was getting done. This comment came in response to a 2000 lawsuit filed by a writers’ assistant, Amaani Lyle, against Warner Bros. and three Friends writers/producers (Adam Chase, Gregory Malins, and Andrew Reich). Lyle alleged sexual harassment, but the case was dismissed because the offensive comments weren’t directed at her personally.
