LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Night is the newest addition to the popular series of games based on well-known franchises. These games usually deliver fun experiences, packed with clever nods and plenty of treats for fans.

Okay, so if you’re already a LEGO game fan, you probably have a good idea of what to expect. But honestly, Legacy of the Dark Knight is the best LEGO game of this type I’ve ever played. And it’s not even a competition – this game is just fantastic. I’m seriously hooked!

LEGO Voyagers is still my all-time favorite LEGO game, though LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a strong contender – I’m still working on completing it! But wow, this Batman game is fantastic. It delivers everything LEGO and Batman fans wanted, and honestly, it even exceeds expectations. Let’s jump in!

A Batman Lover’s Paradise

As a huge Batman fan, I was blown away by how much love and attention to detail went into LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. The game is packed with even the most obscure references that you wouldn’t expect to find, making it a truly comprehensive and nostalgic experience. It feels like a complete collection of Batman history and lore, all wrapped up in one video game.

The game features over 100 unlockable suits for the characters, each with a fun and interesting backstory revealed when you get it. You can also unlock a huge variety of vehicles, including classic Batmobiles and rarer finds like the Robinmobile—a vehicle that debuted in a 1951 comic and hasn’t appeared often since. This level of detail is sure to impress players and build a dedicated fanbase.

Legacy of the Dark Knight features a huge roster of playable heroes and villains, including Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. They’ll team up to defeat a powerful group of Batman’s most iconic enemies – a truly impressive collection of villains all in one game.

The game features a rogues’ gallery of Batman’s most iconic villains – Joker, Bane, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Penguin, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, and more. Each villain offers a unique and engaging final battle or showdown. As a huge Batman fan, I have to say this LEGO game is incredible! It’s packed with so much awesome stuff that really shows the creators get Batman – tons of references and nods to the character’s history that feel genuinely special. LEGO games always have a lot of characters, but this one feels different. It’s not just a lot of fan service, it’s the right fan service, and it’s clear this game was made by people who really love and understand Batman. Honestly, it’s on par with how well Sony’s Spider-Man games treat their fans!

Familiar Stories Tied Together in a Cool, Creative Way

From the campy beginnings with Bat-Shark Repellent to critically acclaimed performances, countless reboots, and all the different costumes, Batman has a long and rich history. Now, with Legacy of the Dark Knight, you can revisit almost every iconic moment from his past. The big question is: which version of the Dark Knight do you like best?

This game is clearly made by people who are passionate about Batman, and it shows. It’s one of the most comprehensive and lovingly crafted collections of Batman history and memorable moments ever assembled in a single video game.

This book offers something for every Batman fan. It starts with a prologue reminiscent of Batman Begins, showing Bruce Wayne’s training with the League of Shadows, and then features six more chapters each inspired by a different Batman film – including Batman ’89, Batman Forever, and The Batman, among others. I won’t reveal the biggest story details, but it’s a comprehensive experience.

While the core storyline will feel recognizable, it’s been creatively adjusted to connect numerous films and shows logically. I believe the ending could have been bolder to create a truly original story, but it’s still incredibly enjoyable to see so many beloved movies woven together.

As you’d expect from LEGO, this story is full of amazing references, jokes, and hidden details. The more you know about Batman, the more you’ll notice, enjoy, and laugh at. They’ve cleverly taken lines and ideas from Batman’s history and reimagined them in really funny and creative ways.

The game is set in a stunning version of Gotham City that feels remarkably lively. It perfectly balances the dark, gritty, and criminal atmosphere you’d expect with LEGO’s signature creativity and color, creating a truly unique and special environment. You’ll recognize famous locations like ACE Chemicals, Falcone’s docks, the museum from the 1989 Batman film, and Wayne Manor, along with many other iconic spots from the Batman universe.

The game generally runs very smoothly and looks great, with only a few minor issues during my playtime. I experienced one crash back to the PS5 menu, and occasionally the camera felt awkward or some messages and objects glitched. However, these small problems didn’t detract from the overall experience. I was consistently impressed with how well TT Games managed to create such a large and polished game.

Becoming the Caped Crusader (and His Sidekicks)

There was a lot of excitement leading up to LEGO Legacy of the Dark Knight, with many hoping it would combine open-world exploration with the excellent combat system from Rocksteady’s Batman games. I’m pleased to say it delivers on both fronts – it really feels like those games, but in LEGO form. Interestingly, the game credits list Rocksteady as a co-developer, which is surprising news that somehow didn’t come out before release – it’s a big deal!

The game is set in a stunning version of Gotham City that feels remarkably alive. It perfectly balances the city’s grim, crime-ridden atmosphere with LEGO’s signature creativity and bright colors, creating a truly unique and special environment.

Honestly, even if it’s unclear exactly how much help Rocksteady gave, it totally explains why Legacy of the Dark Knight plays so well. It really feels like the Arkham combat, but perfectly translated into LEGO form. You’ll be smoothly moving between bad guys, timing those counters, dodges, punches, and special moves – it’s almost like a fast-paced, swirling dance of awesome fighting!

Moving unseen is a lot of fun in Legacy of the Dark Knight. Enemies will show alerts when they suspect you’re nearby, giving you time to plan your attacks – whether it’s striking from above, sneaking up for a silent takedown (even with comical weapons like frying pans!), or simply charging in for a brawl. The game lets you fight however you want, and no matter your style, the combat feels great and works smoothly.

Each chapter of the game introduces new tools and gadgets. While Batman has his classic Batarangs and grappling hook, it’s often his sidekicks who really shine, similar to how finding a new item in a Zelda game lets you solve previously impossible puzzles.

Catwoman’s skilled at opening safes and can send a trained cat into small areas. Batgirl can hack computers with a fun, Frogger-style game and deploy drones to swing from. Gordon uses a foam gun to disable devices. What really makes the game enjoyable is how fun each character’s gadgets are, and the levels are cleverly designed to showcase them. I was constantly excited to discover new ways to use these tools as I progressed.

The game equips every player with a fantastic grappling hook and glider for soaring around Gotham. Plus, each character has their own unique, customizable vehicle for street travel. What’s truly remarkable is how consistently enjoyable all of these tools are to use. Playing solo or with a friend is a blast, and switching between characters to overcome challenges is consistently rewarding, engaging, and fun.

You can play Legacy of the Dark Knight by following the main story, but the open-world environment is really the star. It’s similar to the Spider-Man games, filled with crimes to solve, things to do, and hidden collectibles. This LEGO Batman game offers a similar experience, though it’s not quite as large as Spider-Man’s world, it’s still very engaging and enjoyable.

The game is fun whether you play by yourself or with a friend locally. Each character is unique and enjoyable, and it’s satisfying to switch between them to overcome different challenges. This keeps the gameplay fresh, engaging, and consistently entertaining.

Honestly, there’s so much to do in this game. I’ve been stopping crimes, chasing down bad guys in cars, and even tackling the Riddler’s puzzles – they’re actually pretty clever! Plus, there are tons of challenges like time trials and hundreds of collectibles to find. Or, if I just want to chill, I can swing around Gotham with the grapple. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but everything is genuinely fun, and I can easily lose dozens of hours exploring and completing stuff if I get hooked.

After finishing the main story in 11 hours, I was surprised to find I’d only completed about 43.5% of the game, including all the extra content. I’m really excited to keep playing and plan to spend a lot more time driving the Tumbler from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and fighting crime in Gotham City.

The game offers three difficulty levels, letting you customize the challenge to your liking. The easiest setting is perfect for younger players. I found the standard difficulty to be really fun, letting me feel like Batman and take down criminals!

You’ll spend some time visiting Bat-Mite’s shops, which are located throughout Gotham City and even inside the Batcave. Speaking of the Batcave, it’s incredibly detailed and you can customize it with items you unlock as you play. You can also expand it using studs – the game’s currency – and collect a lot more of them by using the classic LEGO stud multiplier!

As a huge LEGO Batman fan, I’m telling you, there’s so much to do! You’ve got challenges to earn more studs, and you can unlock even more cool stuff – like suits and content – if you connect your Twitch and HBO accounts. Honestly, the game is just packed with fun things to discover, and it’s amazing from start to finish. I could seriously keep talking about it all day, but Gotham needs me! Time to suit up as The Animated Series Batman – Alfred, get the suit ready!
