John Wick Creator’s Gritty New “Anti-Action” Crime Thriller Officially Releases On Digital Next Month

John Wick creator Derek Kolstad’s newest film, Normal, will be released on digital platforms soon.

The movie Normal will be available to rent or buy on digital platforms starting Tuesday, May 19th at midnight EDT. Viewers on the West Coast can watch it beginning Monday, May 18th at 9 p.m. PDT. You can currently pre-order it on Prime Video for $24.99 in standard or high definition.

The Blu-ray release is scheduled for July 14, but a streaming date hasn’t been announced yet.

Ben Wheatley, known for directing films like Meg 2: The Trench and episodes of Doctor Who, directed Normal. The script was written by Derek Kolstad, who also wrote the John Wick films and executive produced the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the John Wick universe spin-off, The Continental.

Bob Odenkirk, known for his roles in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, plays Ulysses, a temporary sheriff who arrives in the small Midwestern town of Normal expecting peace and quiet. But when a bank robbery occurs, he discovers that Normal, Minnesota, is full of secrets, crime, and even connections to the Yakuza gang.

In a recent conversation with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant, director Wheatley called his film Normal an “anti-action” thriller. He explained that characters die in a series of unfortunate accidents—similar to the Final Destination movies—while Ulysses finds himself in a dangerous and unsettling situation.

Released on April 17th, just under two weeks ago, the movie Normal has been well-received by critics, earning a 75% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It opened at number 7 in theaters and has since made $4.5 million.

The movie had its first public screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in the fall of 2025, before being released in theaters.

Bob Odenkirk acts alongside a talented cast including Henry Winkler, known from Happy Days, Lena Headey of Game of Thrones, as well as Billy MacLellan, Brendan Fletcher, Peter Shinkoda, Jess McLeod, Reena Jolly, and Ryan Allen.

Odenkirk also served as an executive producer alongside Kolstad and Mark Provissiero.

Bob Odenkirk and David Kolstad have collaborated on projects before. Prior to Normal, Kolstad wrote the screenplays for Nobody and Nobody 2, both of which featured Odenkirk—known from Breaking Bad—as a retired hitman whose quiet family life is disrupted when a powerful mobster comes after him.

The movie follows Hutch Mansell as he tries to escape a stressful life with a vacation, but quickly finds himself in an even more perilous situation.

Bob Odenkirk is known for his roles in critically acclaimed shows like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, which both earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He’s also appeared in popular films and series such as Nebraska, The Post, Incredibles 2, Fargo, and Lucky Hank, as well as numerous other projects.

Normal will be released on digital platforms on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
