Okay, so if you’re feeling bummed about the recent stuff with Melissa Barrera and Scream, don’t give up on smart horror just yet! There’s another really interesting movie coming out soon that’s playing with the same kind of meta ideas – you know, a movie about horror movies. And the best part? Jasmin Savoy Brown is in it! It’s called Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, and it’s from the director of I Saw the TV Glow. From what I’ve gathered, it’s about a struggling horror franchise getting a reboot, and it sounds like it’s also going to dig into some pretty intense personal stuff – that’s a hallmark of Schoenbrun’s work. Apparently, the story follows a young director brought in to revive the Camp Miasma slasher series, and she ends up visiting the original film’s star, who’s become a total recluse. Things get… messy, to say the least. The trailer suggests Hannah Einbinder is playing the director, and get this – Gillian Anderson is the original final girl! Seriously, from obsessing over X-Files message boards to directing Scully herself? That’s a huge moment for Jane Schoenbrun, and I’m really excited to see what they’ve created.
Director Schoenbrun has called their new film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, a story about discovering sexual pleasure after transitioning, and notes it’s both funnier and more shocking than their previous movies. The film features Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Jack Haven (from I Saw the TV Glow). The trailer also seems to include a nod to the iconic Pyramid Head from Silent Hill. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma hits theaters on August 7th.
