The new DC Universe, spearheaded by James Gunn, officially launched with last year’s Superman movie. While Superman was the first full introduction to Gunn’s vision of DC’s heroes and a stunning look at the universe, it wasn’t actually the very first project. The first season of Peacemaker was reworked to fit into this new continuity, and Creature Commandos premiered on HBO Max over six months before David Corenswet’s Superman graced the big screen.
James Gunn was developing a Creature Commandos animated series before becoming co-CEO of DC Studios and the leader of the new DC Universe. One of his first actions in the new role was to approve the Creature Commandos show, which served as a preview of the revamped DCU. While Superman will formally introduce the broader universe, Creature Commandos offered an early look at Gunn’s creative vision – the types of stories and characters he plans to highlight within the DC Comics world.
Even though Dean Lorey became the showrunner, James Gunn wrote every episode of Creature Commandos, and his unique style is very noticeable throughout the series. You’ll see his dark humor, references to obscure comic book moments, and a focus on making even outlandish characters feel real. The story is largely independent and doesn’t have much impact on the broader DC Universe, but it offers an exciting glimpse of what’s to come.
Creature Commandos Is Classic James Gunn
James Gunn first gained recognition with Guardians of the Galaxy, and has since become known for transforming lesser-known comic book characters into fan favorites. He consistently tells stories about the bonds of chosen families, often using quirky and unlikely groups of heroes. We’ve seen this pattern in his work with teams like Task Force X in The Suicide Squad, the 11th Street Kids in Peacemaker, and the Justice Gang in Superman, as well as with the Guardians of the Galaxy themselves, the Ravagers, the Nova Corps, and even Rocket’s former lab companions.
Creature Commandos is the latest story to feature a team of unlikely heroes. This time, it centers around Task Force M, a group of dangerous monsters led by the Bride, a companion of Eric Frankenstein. The cast includes Sydney Chandler as a vampire, Sean Gunn as a robot dedicated to fighting Nazis, and Alan Tudyk as Clayface. Like Gunn’s other projects, the series excels at making you care about its strange characters – even the ones who are, well, monsters. Creature Commandos is unapologetically bizarre, darkly funny, and surprisingly heartfelt. It can even take a character like Weasel, a chaotic force of nature, and give him a sad past that makes you feel for him.
Critics loved the arrival of Creature Commandos on HBO Max. The show received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with praise directed at James Gunn’s writing, the strong voice acting, and its surprisingly emotional story. What began as a simple superhero cartoon turned into a truly beautiful and moving animated series.
Will Creature Commandos Get A Second Season?
Even before its first episodes aired in December 2024, Creature Commandos was already picked up for a second season. However, James Gunn has a lot on his plate – he’s managing all of DC’s upcoming projects, reviewing scripts, and currently working on the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. Because of this, he’s passing the responsibility for season two of Creature Commandos to a team of writers.
James Gunn recently announced that season two of Creature Commandos is being made now and will be released as soon as it’s finished. While animation takes time and money, production is moving forward. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long for new DCU content, as Supergirl, Clayface, and Lanterns are all scheduled to come out in the next few months, even before Creature Commandos is ready.
