A young fan from Mexico became an online sensation at the first World Cup game for his festive Christmas sweater. Thanks to social media users finding him, he’s now received a free team jersey!
So, the 2026 World Cup kicked off with Mexico taking down South Africa 2-0, but honestly, everyone was talking about this one kid in the crowd more than the actual game. It was wild how much attention they were getting!
The boy didn’t have a Mexico jersey, so he put together a creative outfit: a green Christmas sweater with Santa on it, white shorts, and red boots. A video of him quickly spread online, and a Mexican sports channel, Claro Sports, asked people on the internet to help them find him.

It totally worked! That little kid, Santi, ended up on TV on June 14th, and he explained he dressed up like the Mexican flag. It was awesome! The national team even sent him his own jersey – a personalized one! – so he can wear it to the game against South Korea on June 19th. I’m so happy for him!
A touching video message from forward Santiago Giménez was shared with him on the live broadcast.
“Hi Santi, how are you doing? It’s Santiago Gimenez, just sending you lots of love,” he shared. “Wishing you all the best, and I hope you enjoy the present. Take care and sending another big hug!”
It was such an amazing day for him, and honestly, for all of us fans!🥹🇲🇽 I’m talking about Santi – he got to visit the Claro Sports studio and it was like a dream come true being surrounded by everything related to our beloved Selección Mexicana. 💚⚽ There were surprises, gifts, and unforgettable moments, and we really got to meet one of the most dedicated fans ever…

People on X were impressed, with one user commenting on the boy’s incredible memory and another saying that’s what makes football special.
The 2026 World Cup is already providing some fun and unexpected moments, even though the first round of games hasn’t finished.
