While some actors dislike becoming strongly associated with a single character, Neil Newbon, the incredible voice actor for Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, seems to be embracing the role. He received the awards for Best Supporting Performer at the Golden Joystick Awards and Best Performance at The Game Awards in 2023, delivering a particularly moving acceptance speech. It’s no surprise he’s not quite ready to leave Astarion behind.
The real human behind the vampire
Neil, one of the voice actors from Baldur’s Gate 3, was invited to participate in a live Dungeons & Dragons game with his fellow castmates. He expressed how much he enjoys playing his character, Astarion, and was delighted to be part of the event with everyone.
He’s meant more than I ever realized he would mean when we started doing the recordings.
Neil Newbon, quite different from Astarion, shared how deeply touching it is to hear fans worldwide say that Baldur’s Gate 3, its characters, and Dungeons & Dragons helped them through difficult periods. Although he considers himself a small piece of a larger team, he’s proud to represent everyone involved in making that positive impact, and he’s clearly very grateful for the experience.
Just as Neil’s character isn’t ready to part with Astarion, fans are eager to see more of the voice actor’s work. There were rumors he’d appear in the trailer for Crimson Desert, and we’re excited to find out what he does next, big or small. This isn’t his first successful role, though – he’s well-known as the voice of Karl Heisenberg in Resident Evil Village and Elijah Kamski in Detroit: Become Human, and even provided his likeness for the latter.
No matter what Neil does next, we’ll likely be hoping he includes a touch of Astarion – that character seems destined to stick with him for a long time.
