Right before Christmas last year, Universal released its first official teaser for Steven Spielberg’s melancholy alien thriller Disclosure Day. The most immediately notable moment in the trailer was Emily Blunt’s newscaster breaking out in alien-speak during the weather report, but what happens right after that is truly astounding. The teaser cuts to a shot of Elizabeth Marvel as a skeptical nun that IMDb refers to as Sister Maura, watching something on TV and lowering her glasses in … disbelief? Anger? It’s an amazing shot, full of intrigue, featuring an actress we all like flanked by a bunch of women also playing nuns. I’ve seen this shot at least once and more likely three times a week since the end of last year. Depending on my mood, the experience is entirely kaleidoscopic: Sometimes seeing Marvel lower her glasses fills me with joy and laughter; other times fear; and on occasion, a dogged desire to know the truth. What the hell is she doing in the movie?
No one seems to know what’s really going on with the new movie, Disclosure Day. While trailers have shown us bits and pieces – like the childhood connection between Josh O’Connor’s and Emily Blunt’s characters, and Wyatt Russell’s involvement – director Steven Spielberg has even hinted that the film acknowledges the reality of aliens. But the biggest mystery remains Sister Maura, a character we’ve only seen briefly in one shot of her watching TV. Since December, that single image has been repeatedly shown in all the promotional material. Now, I believe the “disclosure” isn’t about aliens at all, but about Sister Maura herself. As Josh O’Connor says in the trailer, “People have a right to know the truth,” and I couldn’t agree more – I need to know more about Elizabeth Marvel’s character!
The premiere of Disclosure Day feels like a turning point. Just as certain trailer moments have become legendary – think Tom Cruise’s motorcycle leap in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, or Jackson gazing at Ally in A Star Is Born – Sister Maura’s image is poised to join that group. The trailers for Disclosure Day promise answers are coming soon, stating, “This summer, all will become clear.” And audiences are eager to see them.
