While many fans were excited about the new Malcolm in the Middle continuation, Life’s Still Unfair, it’s disappointing that not all of the original cast members could return. The announcement of the revival sparked a lot of discussion, and a major concern for viewers has been the absence of Erik Per Sullivan, the actor who played Dewey. This has led many to focus on his missing role, overshadowing the fact that other original cast members aren’t appearing in the new series either.
It’s easy to lose track of people over time. While many familiar faces return for the new season of the funny and classic sitcom, some characters, like Cynthia and Jessica, aren’t seen or even mentioned. Interestingly, two characters were always going to be absent from the Malcolm in the Middle reunion, but the show still managed to find a way to include them.
‘Malcolm in the Middle’s Revival Includes Nods to Daniel von Bargen & Kenneth Mars

The fourth episode of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair brings back several familiar faces, and it’s really enjoyable to reconnect with them after so long. While not everyone could make it to Lois and Hal’s 40th anniversary celebration, the episode includes touching nods to characters who have passed away since the show originally ended.
One notable figure is Edwin Spangler, who was the head of cadets when Francis attended Marlin Academy. Spangler was a memorable villain and a generally impressive character on Malcolm in the Middle. Though the actor who played him, Daniel von Bargen – also known for roles in Seinfeld and Super Troopers – sadly passed away in 2015, the show Life’s Still Unfair still acknowledges his iconic character. During a party, Francis’s former military friends – Eric Hanson, Drew Horton, and Ken Finley – raise a toast to their late teacher and later reminisce about their rebellious past, even joking about beheading a statue.
A key figure missing from the new season of Malcolm in the Middle is Kenneth Mars, who played Otto, Francis’s former employer. Mars, a memorable actor from films like The Producers and Young Frankenstein, and the voice of King Triton in The Little Mermaid, sadly passed away in 2011. Otto was a great character who recognized Francis’s potential, and arguably, he’s the reason Francis turned out so well – something Lois and Hal should be grateful for. Although they can’t thank him now, the revival does show us what happened with his wife, Gretchen. It’s surprising to see Gretchen at Lois and Hal’s party, but it’s a welcome appearance. She reveals she’s now a cow doula and offers to share the gender of Piama’s baby. Despite the sadness of not seeing Otto, Gretchen seems to be thriving.
The show Malcolm in the Middle realistically portrayed life’s ups and downs, and two characters, Spangler and Otto, really captured that balance. Both men significantly impacted Francis, a fact that’s still clear when we see him again in the revival. It’s sad they couldn’t be at Hal and Lois’ anniversary, but it’s nice the show still acknowledges them and their importance.
