Ghost of Yotei involves a lot of fighting against Lord Saito’s army and exploring the countryside, but you’ll also spend a significant amount of time climbing mountains. Like many games, it uses white stones to show you the way, but it took me hours to realize those stones weren’t natural – they were actually bird droppings!
Let’s be honest: something strange is happening. As Atsu climbs the mountain, the path turns from rock to a white, messy substance at the peak. You might try to explain it away as chalk or paint, but there’s always a bird that flies off right when you arrive. Is it just a coincidence that this bird is always there, seemingly multitasking with a rather large… deposit?

It’s really unpleasant, and thankfully, I’m not the only one who’s noticed. George Foster at TheGamer pointed it out, and someone on Reddit even suggested it’s why players complain about the protagonist Atsu’s cooking. Honestly, saying something “tastes terrible” would be a completely accurate description. Let’s just be glad those birds don’t have sensitive stomachs, because that would be even worse and make climbing around them impossible.
Ghost of Yotei launched in early October as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Our team was highly impressed, with reviewer Richard Wakeling praising it as a game that feels unique despite familiar gameplay. We just wish we’d seen the issues sooner.
