FX’s new sci-fi horror series, The Beauty, is now the most-watched show on Disney Plus, topping streaming charts globally as of today.
The new show, The Beauty, is based on an Image Comics series and blends the world of high fashion with scary, sci-fi elements. Its quick rise in popularity shows that comics outside of Marvel and DC can be just as successful. The Beauty joins other well-known shows adapted from independent comics, like The Walking Dead and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Even though Ryan Murphy’s new series has only been available for four days, it’s quickly become the most popular show on Disney Plus. This is likely due to months of buzz and the fact that FX kept many details secret, building anticipation for The Beauty. However, it’s still too early to tell if this initial popularity will last, as the first wave of excitement often dies down after a week.
The FX series focuses on the dark side of the fashion world and its unrealistic beauty expectations. When a series of unsettling deaths begin among famous supermodels, baffling investigators, law enforcement gets involved to uncover the truth behind this disturbing new trend.
As the death toll rises, FBI agents Cooper Madsen (Evan Peters) and Jordan Bennett (Rebecca Hall) are sent to Paris to look into what seems like a global conspiracy. They soon uncover something much more terrifying: a virus that physically transforms people into their ideal version of beauty.
The TV show is based on comic books by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurle, but there are some key differences. The transformations the characters undergo in the show are much more disturbing and violent than in the original comics. Both versions of the virus causing the changes are spread through sexual contact, but the show depicts a painful process with high fever and body contortions. In the comics, the transformation is quicker and less severe – characters simply have a fever and wake up changed.
One of the more minor changes involves the detectives. Their names are different in the show—Drew Foster and Kara Vaughn—compared to the comics. The TV series reimagines them as entirely new people, whereas the comic books simply depict them as more conventionally attractive versions of their original selves.
You can watch new episodes of The Beauty on FX every Wednesday at 9 PM Eastern and 6 PM Pacific time. If you have the Disney Plus and Hulu bundle, you can also stream the latest episodes the next day.
