Ubisoft hasn’t revealed what’s coming after Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but the new game’s feature of playing as two characters – Yasuke and Naoe – suggests we might see more games with multiple playable characters in the future.
According to Simon Lemay-Comtois, associate director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the team is open to making more games with two main characters, but only if it makes sense for the story and the game’s world, as he told GamesRadar.
While Yasuke and Noae aren’t the first pair of main characters in an Assassin’s Creed game – twins Jacob and Evie starred in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – Shadows gives its two heroes more distinct personalities and playstyles. Yasuke excels in direct combat, while Noae is more skilled at stealth. The developers, including Lemay-Comtois, were aware of these differences and addressed some of the criticism that arose from including Yasuke in the game.
Having two main characters can be tricky, and fans often react in unexpected ways. It’s not always about preferring one storyline over another – sometimes people simply dislike spending time with one of the characters. We saw this with characters like Evie and Jacob, but the dynamic between Naoe and Yasuke seems to create a stronger divide among fans. We anticipated this possibility during development, and we were aware it might split our audience.
Looking ahead to future installments, Lemay-Comtois stated that parkour will be a major focus. He admitted that parkour hasn’t been heavily emphasized in previous Assassin’s Creed games, but explained that they’re working to change that with the upcoming Shadows release and are making it clear internally that parkour is a key element of the game. Their goal is to significantly improve and expand the parkour experience.
Lemay-Comtois recently announced that Shadows won’t receive a second downloadable expansion, unlike previous Assassin’s Creed games. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot also explained that the game’s release was delayed due to negative feedback. Despite this, Ubisoft reports that Shadows and older Assassin’s Creed titles actually performed better than expected in the last financial quarter.
Players of Assassin’s Creed Shadows can currently enjoy a free mission based on Attack on Titan, but this special content is only available until December 22nd.
