Okay, huge spoilers ahead for For All Mankind season 5, episode 6! I’ve been watching this season, and honestly, the tension with the Sons & Daughters of Mars group on the Mars base has been building. Basically, the countries involved – the M6 nations – have this agreement to share Mars, but it feels like the people actually living there, the ones who’ve built a life on the planet, are getting the short end of the stick. It’s creating a real problem, and I’m really invested in seeing how it plays out.
At first, the SDM appeared to be a small group dedicated to improving life on Mars. However, the events of the fifth episode of For All Mankind season 5, and the resulting conflict in the sixth episode, have led people to question the group’s motives and whether their actions are justified.
For All Mankind’s Sons & Daughters Of Mars Have Taken Over The Mars Base
In “No Sudden Moves,” Gerardo Ortiz-Niño and his group have seized control of the base and are holding its leaders hostage. Having successfully fought off the Peacekeepers and obtained weapons, Gerardo is worried about the consequences of his actions, but understands that change is necessary.
The situation quickly escalated into a violent conflict with no simple resolution. Fortunately, Miles Dale arrived and helped to calm things down. Aleida Rosales also left her post at Helios and went to the control room to assist her team. Thanks to their combined efforts, most of the hostages were released, but Governor Leonid Polivanov remained captive.
Once everyone calmed down, Miles formulated a set of demands to send to the M6, asking Leonid to deliver them in a short video. However, the US President immediately refused to meet any of the demands, which worsened the situation and left both sides unsure of what would happen next.
The SDM’s Demands Aren’t That Unreasonable
The problem is that the colony administrator’s requests actually seem quite sensible. Considering over 5,000 people now live on Mars, Miles points out that this distant, growing colony deserves some independence in how it governs itself.
Life on Mars feels more like imprisonment than a free society. The colony isn’t truly governed by the people, but by the Earthbound M6 – an unelected leadership with Peacekeepers who are easily corrupted and prioritize their own interests over the well-being of those they’re meant to protect.
Essentially, the people want to control their own destiny. To that end, Miles is halting all Iridium shipments leaving the planet, hoping to negotiate against the proposed automation plans – a tactic similar to strikes and protests used on Earth.
The Power Imbalance On Mars Has Led To A Major Divide Between The SDM And The M6
I’ve always been amazed by what the M6 accomplished. They didn’t just land on Mars, they built a future there. It started with establishing a base, then a colony, really paving the way for a life beyond Earth. It’s incredible to think that wasn’t even their original goal! Seeing people arrive, families putting down roots, and children being raised on another planet… it’s become a true home for a new generation. And honestly, I believe this community has the potential to flourish beyond anything anyone could have imagined.
M6 is prioritizing profits and plans to automate its Mars operations. This means most of its workforce will be sent back to Earth without job security or a stable future for their families. This is especially difficult for those who have built lives and hoped to spend their futures on Mars.
Despite the M6 presenting itself as a caring and effective government, the SDM was created as a sensible reaction to those in power who are prioritizing profit over people. Though the Sons & Daughters of Mars have acted quickly and dramatically, they aren’t simply villains in For All Mankind.
