A California farmer is upset with tourists who damaged his flower fields while trying to take pictures for social media, like TikTok. He described their behavior as wild and disrespectful.
Visiting farms to pick apples, pumpkins, and flowers is a tradition many families and couples enjoy. Recently, some farms have become incredibly popular because of attention on social media.
Lots of people on TikTok and Instagram are visiting farms these days simply because they’re beautiful and create a good atmosphere. They’re looking for picture-perfect flowers and pumpkins to share with their followers.
John Bos, known for his beautiful tulip fields, unfortunately had them damaged by visitors who were only interested in taking pictures for social media. They didn’t even pick the tulips, they just trampled them for photos.
Farmer hits out at visitors from TikTok
Bos, owner of Dutch Hollow Farms, said the farm was often too crowded during tulip season, forcing him to turn people away. Unfortunately, some visitors who did get in ended up walking on and damaging the flowers.
The video went viral on TikTok, and we were quickly flooded with visitors. We expected a decent turnout, but nothing prepared us for the sheer number of people who showed up,” the farmer explained to the Daily Mail.
He said the large number of visitors were destructive, explaining that people would take beautiful photos in the field and then carelessly discard 10 to 15 flower stems.
When people picked flowers in his field just to carry them away, Bos couldn’t sell them. He explained, “It’s like stealing – even though you’re not physically removing the plants, it damages the crop and costs me money.”
To prevent further damage, Bos told the Daily Mail he plans to add security patrols the next time the field is open to the public.
