The TV series Off Campus, based on Elle Kennedy’s novel ‘The Deal’, is now available to stream. It features plenty of college romance – fake relationships, hookups, and breakups – as students at Briar U search for love. However, not all the couples have a strong connection.
During the first season, most of the main characters are involved in multiple romantic relationships, adding a layer of complexity to their connections—it’s clear not everyone will end up together. However, a couple of characters aren’t focused on romance at all. Tucker seems more interested in cooking than dating, and Jules prioritizes managing their social media presence over finding a partner.
Garrett, Dean, Hannah, Allie, and Logan create a lot of exciting romantic connections that happen simultaneously, more than compensating for any shortcomings.
Everyone agrees Garrett and Hannah were the couple to root for in the first season of Off Campus. But it seems season two is switching things up, focusing on Allie and Dean – and many fans feel that’s where the story should be! They have great chemistry, but which relationships on the show truly sparked, and which ones didn’t quite catch fire?
7. Garrett and Kendall
It’s not unexpected that Garrett and Kendall lack chemistry, considering Garrett isn’t looking for anything emotional. At the beginning of the season, their friends-with-benefits arrangement feels more focused on the physical side of things than actual friendship.
Their connection seemed to fizzle out quickly, and we didn’t really see any genuine romantic moments between them. Considering Kendall barely knew Garrett beyond his looks, it’s probably safe to say there wasn’t much of a spark. It was good to see them end things on better terms, though!
6. Hannah and Logan
Although Hannah and Logan were never really a likely couple, either in the books or the TV show, they shared a spark of chemistry that’s worth noting. Logan quickly develops feelings for Hannah, but he holds back because of her relationship with Garrett, and ultimately because he values their friendship and knows Garrett is in love with her. While his attempts to win her over aren’t particularly attractive, they do have a few genuinely sweet moments together before the situation becomes one-sided.
Okay, so when Hannah kissed Logan, supposedly to show Garrett it didn’t mean anything, I definitely saw some chemistry – at least from Logan’s side! But it was in Episode 3, when they actually talked and connected, that it really became obvious. Hannah was just figuring out they’d met before, but honestly, if Hannah and Garrett weren’t meant to be together, that moment could have been the start of something really cute. It wasn’t a huge spark, but there was something there, you know?
5. Allie and Sean
In the series ‘The Deal,’ Allie and Sean start out with a very strong relationship, so it was surprising to see them struggle so early on in the first season of Off Campus. This likely wasn’t an accident; the show may have deliberately downplayed their connection. If Allie and Sean had maintained the perfect romance from the original book, Allie’s decision to have an affair with Dean could have made her seem unsympathetic.
It’s actually easy to hope Sean and his partner break up – he’s just not a very likable character! He doesn’t seem excited about her success, especially when she mentions getting an agent, which quickly ruins the good impression they initially made as a couple. They did have some genuinely sweet moments and good chemistry at times, though. If the show had stuck closer to the storyline of ‘The Deal,’ their connection probably would have been much stronger.
4. Allie and Hunter Davenport
Allie and Hunter (who is actually Carter St. James the 5th) share an instant connection, starting with a charged first meeting at a bar. What begins as a casual encounter quickly becomes something more, fueled by undeniable chemistry. Even though Allie is initially distracted by feelings for Dean, their first kiss is incredibly passionate. It’s a testament to actor Charlie Evans’s skill that he manages to convey all this heat while wearing a rather cliché preppy sweater.
Allie and Dean have a connection, but the show ‘Off Campus’ seems to be building a love triangle in its second season. The strong chemistry between Allie and Hunter will likely be a central part of this storyline. While Allie still has feelings for Dean, it’s hinted that she and Hunter might have become a couple if they’d met first. Dean seems aware of this, which promises to make the next season full of drama!
3. Hannah and Garrett
Despite having the potential for the strongest connection this season, this couple didn’t quite deliver on the chemistry. They shared some genuinely good moments – their first kiss in the gym was particularly tense and there were a few other scenes where you could feel a spark. Their intimate scene was also a highlight, offering a playful and romantic moment that many viewers will enjoy.
While the show has some great scenes, the connection between the characters sometimes feels more like a friendship than a passionate romance. Garrett’s confidence is softened for the series, which makes sense given his personality might not appeal to everyone, but it also diminishes some of the spark. However, when Garrett playfully challenges Hannah, or encourages her to be more assertive, their chemistry is truly captivating.
It’s striking how quickly he became distracted – he completely forgot about the woman he was just with when Hannah appeared.
2. Hannah and Justin
Okay, let’s talk about Hannah’s love life. As a viewer, I’m firmly Team Garrett. He and Hannah have a genuine connection, something built on a real friendship – and that’s a solid foundation. Justin? Honestly, it feels very surface level. She’s attracted to his looks and his musician vibe, and that’s fine for a fleeting infatuation, but I just don’t see the depth needed for a lasting relationship. It’s all a bit too much style and not enough substance, if you ask me.
Despite some frustrating moments – Justin can be a bit condescending – the chemistry between him and Hannah is fantastic. You really feel Hannah’s strong desire for Justin to reciprocate her feelings. He perfectly embodies that classic ‘lead singer’ appeal, and watching them steal glances at each other throughout the series is incredibly engaging. Hannah’s obvious nervousness around him adds to the tension in exactly the right way, and their piano scene is a standout moment of perfection.
Justin might be flawed and seems attracted to Hannah precisely because she’s not readily available, but the connection between them feels incredibly real and strong.
1. Allie and Dean
Allie and Dean were the most captivating couple this season. Mika Abdalla is incredibly charismatic as Allie, and her fantastic outfits add to the appeal. Stephen Kalyn perfectly portrays Dean as someone who is both vulnerable and self-assured. Their chemistry is undeniable, and it’s clear they’ve had a connection for quite some time, even before the show reveals the length of their relationship.
Dean and Allie connect quickly, almost as fast as Hannah and Garrett, but their initial attraction is more understated. Their similar attitudes towards sex and fun suggest a good match, and the chemistry builds steadily, especially at the Halloween party. Their intimate scenes are well-done – realistic, sexy, and funny, with the bathtub scene being a highlight. The secrecy of their relationship adds another layer of excitement to their romance.
It might be surprising that Allie and Dean had a much stronger connection than Hannah and Garrett, but it’s great news for the show’s next season. Dean is already involved in conflict with Davenport (and it’s not just about what happened to his sister!), giving him and Allie plenty of potential for drama. There might even be a little something left between Allie and Hunter. Overall, season 2 of Off Campus is shaping up to be really exciting!
The worst part of it is that we have to wait for it to arrive!
