It makes seeing those eggs hatch in Game of Thrones even more amazing, knowing how rare they’d become.

Prince Lucerys and his dragon Arrax were killed by Vhagar, Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys died in battle, and Aegon II’s dragon Sunfyre is believed to be dead following the Battle at Rook’s Rest. Sadly, many more dragons will likely die before the Targaryen civil war is over.

At the start of the Dance of the Dragons, there were twenty dragons living. By the end, only four remained, signifying a devastating loss for both sides of the conflict and marking the end of an era for Targaryen dragonriders. Over time, dragons faded into myth, foreshadowing a grim future for the Targaryen dynasty.

Furthermore, House of the Dragon vividly illustrates the risks of denying a woman the right to lead. The Greens illegally seized power, even though Rhaenyra had a stronger claim to the throne. As a critic, I have to say this storyline feels like a real missed opportunity when it comes to female leadership in Westeros. Readers familiar with Fire & Blood learn about Rhaenyra’s character and motivations through its historical storytelling. However, House of the Dragon gives her character more depth and complexity than the book does.
