10 Hunter X Hunter Characters Most Likely To Die When The Manga Returns

The manga is back from another break, and this time it’s diving into what many fans consider Togashi’s most perilous storyline yet. The setting, a ship called the Black Whale, is a pressure cooker of tension, as every important character has some kind of conflict with another. And Togashi is known for not hesitating to eliminate beloved characters when these conflicts reach a breaking point.

Yoshihiro Togashi often foreshadows a character’s death well in advance, subtly setting up the circumstances through the power system (‘Nen’), the way the story is told, and by removing any potential saviors. Because many characters already have these warning signs, the continuation of Hunter x Hunter isn’t just thrilling – for some of them, it likely signals their approaching demise.

Fugetsu Is Burning Through The Time Kacho Died To Give Her

Fugetsu is being controlled by dark spirits, and she mistakenly believes she can use her special ability to escape danger daily without any harm. However, Melody and the spirit of Kacho’s guardian beast know Fugetsu is getting weaker quickly because of the constant strain, and they’re in a race against time to help her.

Kacho sacrificed herself to liberate Fugetsu, and now Fugetsu is rapidly exhausting the time she gained. The author, Togashi, intentionally created a sense of urgency around her, as he often does with time-sensitive situations in Hunter x Hunter. The heartbreaking part is that Fugetsu’s naiveté isn’t a weakness, but a deliberate part of her story, making her a surprisingly dangerous player in the Succession Contest.

Bonolenov Is Surviving Through A Trick That Cannot Last Forever

Bonolenov has been pretending to be Hisoka in recent chapters, deliberately giving false information to the Xi-Yu mafia. This strategy is currently successful, but Bonolenov understands he wouldn’t stand a chance in a direct fight against Hisoka. As soon as Hisoka discovers the disguise, Bonolenov will lose his only means of protection.

Watching the Phantom Troupe, I’ve noticed Bonolenov hasn’t had much focus in the story lately. His Nen ability, Metamorphosen, was mostly used for trickery during the Succession Contest, not actual fighting. He hasn’t really been involved in a serious, high-stakes battle yet. And with Hisoka openly wanting to eliminate all members of the Troupe, Bonolenov seems like the most vulnerable target right now.

Luzurus Sits Between Two Groups That Want Him Gone

Melody, Kaiser, and the spirit of Kacho’s beast have all decided to kill Luzurus, believing he’s responsible for Fugetsu’s declining health. They feel time is short and want to act before the upcoming Royal Banquet. This means a plan to murder Luzurus is already underway, and he currently has no protection to prevent it.

Luzurus is different from the other princes because he’s connected to the Kakin mafia. He has ties to Heil-Ly, and Benjamin’s strict rules are making things difficult for everyone in Tier 1. This puts Luzurus in a dangerous position, caught between two groups who both want him dead. With Melody’s team closing in and Heil-Ly becoming increasingly unstable, Luzurus has no easy way out.

Chrollo Already Accepted That The Spider Matters More Than Himself

Chrollo made it clear to the Phantom Troupe that the group’s success is more important than any single member, including himself. He’s also been working to improve his Skill Hunter ability, anticipating another battle with Hisoka – a conflict the author, Togashi, has been foreshadowing since their previous fight ended with Hisoka’s return.

The Phantom Troupe’s history starts in Meteor City with the loss of their friend, Sarasa, a tragedy that deeply affected them all, especially Chrollo. The story doesn’t allow such painful events to repeat endlessly. Chrollo’s death at the hands of Hisoka would provide a satisfying and conclusive ending to the Troupe’s storyline.

Morena Prudo Built An Ability Designed To Outlive Her

Morena’s Contagion allows her followers to become stronger by defeating enemies. Once they reach Level 100, they can create their own group of 22 infected individuals, independent of Morena. This suggests she’s establishing a legacy that will continue even after she’s gone, potentially hinting at her eventual demise before her plans are fully realized.

Morena is a powerful character, currently at level 45 – a detail the author, Togashi, hasn’t explained yet in Hunter x Hunter. While incredibly intelligent and possessing a truly terrifying ability, she isn’t a fighter. Now, Chrollo, Feitan, and Phinks are closing in on her location, and she won’t be able to talk her way out of this confrontation.

Feitan Is Heading Toward Enemies He Knows Nothing About

Feitan and Phinks are going straight into the Heil-Ly hideout, which is full of Nen users with powers Feitan doesn’t know anything about. This is a risky move, as Hunter x Hunter often severely punishes characters for rushing in unprepared. Feitan’s special ability, Rising Sun, needs him to take a lot of damage before he can use it, making him especially vulnerable in a fight where Heil-Ly has control of the surroundings.

Aside from the current danger, Hisoka is actively seeking strong opponents. Of all the Phantom Troupe members besides Chrollo, he most wants to kill Feitan. Feitan’s death would deeply affect the Troupe, more so than the loss of many other members – a painful emotional blow that the author, Togashi, often uses in Hunter x Hunter.

Tubeppa Allying With Tserriednich Is A Slow Death Sentence Rather Than A Strategy

Tubeppa’s agreement with Tserriednich isn’t a lasting partnership, but a convenient arrangement. Tserriednich has the ability to see ten seconds into the future, which gives him a significant advantage in any discussion or potential conflict. He’s always planning ahead, and he’ll only maintain the alliance with Tubeppa as long as she benefits him.

Once Tserriednich realizes Kurapika’s Nen training is more valuable than the political information Tubeppa provides, she becomes a liability – someone who knows too much and needs to be dealt with. Because Tubeppa’s bodyguard, Longhi, has become an important character even without Tubeppa, it suggests Tubeppa’s life is in danger.

Benjamin Declaring Martial Law Removed The One Thing Keeping Him Untouchable

Benjamin has imposed martial law on the Black Whale, granting himself the power to order executions without trials. While this might give him a temporary advantage, it removes the political support that was previously protecting him.

The real issue is that Benjamin in Hunter x Hunter relies heavily on overwhelming power. While his ability grows stronger with every soldier lost, and has incredible potential, Tserriednich is currently too powerful for Benjamin’s direct, forceful tactics to overcome.

Kurapika’s Power Consumes His Life Every Time He Uses It

Kurapika’s Emperor Time ability is incredibly costly – each second he uses it takes one hour off his life. Even with this steep price, he relied on it heavily throughout the Succession War, using it to teach Nen, question captives, and fight continuously. The anime and manga never reveal exactly how much lifespan Kurapika has remaining, and this appears to be intentional, maintaining an element of mystery around his condition.

Kurapika’s determination to reclaim the Scarlet Eyes, even if it kills him, is the very foundation of his Nen powers. Facing Tserriednich, who possesses the last remaining set of Kurta eyes and can foresee the next ten seconds, Kurapika might be able to succeed if he uses his full strength. However, doing so would almost certainly cost him his life.

Hisoka’s Revival Would Only Repeat The Death He Already Escaped Once

Hisoka cleverly used his Nen ability, Bungee Gum, after his death to restart his heart and bring himself back to life. However, because everyone witnessed Machi reconstruct his body once already, any future attempts to kill him in the story will need to be handled differently. A second resurrection would feel predictable, and a definitive, well-written death would be a natural conclusion to the arc Togashi began for Hisoka way back in the Heaven’s Arena storyline.

Hisoka finally got the intense battle with Chrollo he’d been craving, but after his defeat, he began targeting the rest of the Phantom Troupe. His story feels aimless after his rematch with Chrollo, and winning that fight would actually leave him with nothing to strive for. In Hunter x Hunter, powerful characters often die once their purpose is fulfilled, so if Hisoka reaches his ultimate goal, there won’t be a narrative reason for him to continue existing in the story.
