Be warned: This article reveals significant spoilers for episode 3 of Euphoria season 3, “The Ballad of Paladin.” It also contains details about intense and upsetting violent scenes.
Nate and Cassie’s wedding being completely chaotic is exactly what you’d expect from Euphoria. Luckily, the third episode of the show’s often-discussed third season, “The Ballad of Paladin,” lived up to the hype and briefly brought the HBO series back to its best – though it remains to be seen if that will last.
The five-year time jump in Euphoria season 3, which moved the characters beyond high school and into early adulthood, quickly received negative reactions. Critics gave the season a low 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes, criticizing it for losing the unique and raw quality that originally made the show stand out. Graeme Guttman of ScreenRant suggested that the season implies creator Sam Levinson may not have fully understood his characters.
The show Euphoria felt less impactful when its main characters were apart, and some viewers were particularly upset by storylines involving Zendaya’s character and Sydney Sweeney’s explicit scenes. Thankfully, episode 3 brought everyone back together for the wedding of the show’s most annoying characters.
Every moment felt incredibly emotional, from Maddy’s pain watching her old love marry her ex-friend, to the intense and complicated reconnection between Jules and Cal. However, much of the tension stemmed from the bride and groom themselves.
Euphoria Season 3 Delivered Its Own Version Of The Red Wedding
Nate went all out to give Cassie the wedding of her dreams, creating an image of incredible success. He spent $50,000 on flowers alone, and the wedding was held at a luxurious location with plenty of champagne and expensive treats. What Cassie didn’t realize was that Nate owed over half a million dollars to a questionable investor named Naz.
It was awful seeing Naz crash the wedding. He was clearly angry with Nate, accusing him of showing off when he still owed him money. It got really tense when Naz actually threatened Nate right there in front of everyone before just walking out. It caused a huge ripple effect – Fred and Heather, who’d put their kids’ college money into Nate’s businesses, were understandably freaked out. And Cassie… well, she completely fell apart. She got really drunk and just broke down, blaming Nate for ruining their wedding and jeopardizing our future together. It was a disaster.
| Nate & Cassie’s Euphoria Relationship Timeline | |
|---|---|
| Season 1 | Dating each other’s best friends — Nate is in a volatile relationship with Maddy, and Cassie is with McKay. |
| Season 2 | Dating each other’s best friends — Nate is in a volatile relationship with Maddy, and Cassie is with McKay. |
| Season 3 | Newly married and $500 thousand in debt thanks to Nate’s shady business dealings. |
As Euphoria has shown us over the last two seasons, Nate is skilled at escaping difficult circumstances. He uses manipulation to reassure Fred and manages to calm Cassie during the car ride home, promising her things will work out. Considering the show’s usual drama, the wedding was surprisingly mild.
Just as Nate carries Cassie into their new home after the wedding, they’re shocked by a final surprise: Naz and one of his men. The man immediately attacks Nate, forcefully pushing Cassie aside. She cries, upset that her wedding day is ruined, while Nate is brutally beaten up behind her in a scene that’s both shocking and strangely amusing.
The most shocking moment arrives when Naz cuts off Nate’s toe with garden shears. While Euphoria is known for its intense scenes, this is the most violent act the show has ever depicted, and it’s been compared to the infamous Red Wedding from Game of Thrones. Some believe this shocking scene could revitalize the upcoming third season.
Euphoria Season 3’s Graphic Toe-Cutting Scene Officially Proves The Characters Are Out Of High School
A common problem with teen dramas, even popular shows like Euphoria, is that they lose direction after the main characters graduate. Often, characters feel unrecognizable, particularly when the story skips ahead in time.
A major issue with Euphoria season 3 is that it’s significantly shifted the show’s focus, both in terms of location and style. Rue’s involvement with crime makes it feel less like a character-driven teen drama and more like a gritty crime show, while Cassie’s storyline felt designed solely for shock value. However, the intense scene in episode 3, where a character’s toe is cut off, finally connects the characters’ current lives with their past experiences in high school.
Nate Jacobs was a popular and privileged high school quarterback who always got his way. He was wealthy, attractive, and used to easily overcoming any challenge, whether it was a competitor for a girl or the repercussions of his own behavior. When Nate was accused of physically assaulting Maddy, leaving visible bruises, he manipulated a situation where an older acquaintance of hers, Tyler, ended up taking the blame. Nate avoided any consequences and continued to dominate life at East Highland High School.
Now grown up, Nate craves the lavish lifestyle he once dreamed of as a teen – a stunning house, a beautiful wife, expensive cars, and wealth. Instead of learning the ropes from his father and building a successful business gradually, Nate took a shortcut, as he always does. He reported Cal to the police and seized control of the business, despite having no idea how to manage it.
Nate’s struggles feel authentic because he’s facing the everyday challenges that come with being an adult. Many viewers can connect to this – things like unexpected bills or getting in trouble with the law. Adult life is often tough and unforgiving, and it doesn’t offer any leeway just because you’re still learning.
The scene where someone’s toes are cut off is shockingly intense, typical of Euphoria. Nate is deeply damaged, far from the confident person he once was. At 23, he’s lost and struggling with significant debt.
Honestly, I’m completely hooked on figuring out how Nate’s going to recover from that scene – it’s tough to paint a rosy picture for your partner when you’re seriously injured! As shocking as it was, it totally fits with everything we’ve seen from Nate in season 3, and even with the character we’ve gotten to know over the whole show. It actually makes me excited for Euphoria season 3, even if I’ll probably be watching it with my eyes half-closed!
