
Eric Overmyer, a well-known television writer, passed away on Monday, March 16th, at the age of 74, after a period of illness. He made significant contributions to police dramas, helping to evolve them into more nuanced shows. He collaborated with David Simon on Homicide: Life on the Street and later co-created Treme with him. Overmyer also worked on shows like Bosch, Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, and various series within the Law & Order franchise. Dick Wolf, the creator of Law & Order, described him as a remarkably talented and beloved individual, adding that he will be greatly missed.
Born in 1951, Eric Overmyer began his television career writing for the medical drama St. Elsewhere. He then joined Homicide in its fourth season, where he met David Simon and the two formed a lasting creative partnership. Overmyer remained with Homicide until the series ended, and later co-wrote and executive produced Homicide: The Movie. He went on to write for Simon’s acclaimed series The Wire and co-created Treme with him, a show set in New Orleans.
Eric Overmyer, the creator of the popular Prime Video series Bosch, passed away. Bosch, which premiered in 2014 and was based on Michael Connelly’s books, became Prime Video’s longest-running show and led to several spin-offs. Overmyer also co-created Bosch: Legacy, which ran for two seasons, and was involved in the 2025 premiere of Ballard, which was renewed for a second season. A new series, Bosch: Start of Watch, starring Cameron Mitchell as a young Harry Bosch, was also announced this year. Connelly shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, praising Overmyer’s contribution to bringing the detective stories to life over 98 episodes and expressing his sadness at the loss of a friend.
