Be aware, spoilers ahead for Season 1, Episode 3 of Dutton Ranch! The episode introduces a new, unexpected villain who poses a threat to Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). The primary obstacle to the Dutton Ranch’s growing cattle business is Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), owner of the 10-Petals Ranch, whom Beth playfully refers to as the “Grizzly in Gucci.”
The new series, Beulah Jackson and the 10-Petals Ranch, draws comparisons to the popular show Yellowstone. Like the late John Dutton from Yellowstone, Beulah is a rancher who has run her family’s property for generations, facing ongoing struggles and violence. She also worries about whether her children are capable of carrying on her legacy at the 10-Petals Ranch.
Beulah Jackson runs the 10-Petals ranch and is in charge of everyone who works there, including her son, Rob-Will, and granddaughter, Oreana Lynn. But she isn’t the ultimate authority – Beulah herself answers to someone at the Dutton Ranch.
Dutton Ranch Has A Mystery Villain Tied To Beulah Jackson & 10-Petals
In the third episode of Dutton Ranch, Beulah Jackson gets a phone call while driving. The male caller speaks to her in a way that’s shockingly bold, something no one in the 10-Petals organization would ever do. He knows about Rob-Will entering rehab and Beulah’s decision to hire a new foreman, and he firmly warns her, “no surprises.”
In the third episode of Dutton Ranch, Beulah doesn’t say who she’s talking to on the phone, but the subtitles identify him as “Mariano.” The end credits reveal the actor who played him is Raoul Max Trujillo, credited as “Mariano Reyes.” This detail offers new insight into what’s happening at the 10-Petals Ranch and how the Jackson family interacts.
In episode 3 of Dutton Ranch, Beulah’s associate, Joaquin Reyes, introduces himself to Beth Dutton while at a bar in Dallas. This reveals that Mariano Reyes is likely Joaquin’s father. Joaquin shares with Beth that Beulah and the Jacksons raised him as if he were one of their own family, and he refers to Beulah as “mom” and Rob-Will as his brother.
Mariano Reyes might be the person funding or controlling the 10-Petals organization. He could be a powerful figure like a Mexican drug cartel leader, reminiscent of a character from the show Landman. The nature of his connection to Beulah is unknown, but while Beulah is determined to lead the 10-Petals independently, Mariano clearly has influence over her.
As a movie fan, I’ve definitely recognized Raoul Max Trujillo from films like Sicario and Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Taylor Sheridan really knows how to write a compelling story! I’m hearing he might be involved with Dutton Ranch as Mariano Reyes. It sounds like he may have already done the voice work for the character, but if Mariano actually shows up on screen, they might go with a more well-known actor. We’ll have to wait and see!
What Dutton Ranch’s Mystery Villain Means For Beth & Rip
In the third episode of Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are unaware of everything happening at the 10-Petals Ranch. After meeting Beulah and Joaquin – who were investigating Beth’s knowledge of Rob-Will’s murder of Wes Ayers (Nakoa DeCoite) in the show’s first episode – Beth begins to understand who the Dutton Ranch is facing as an enemy.
As of the third episode of Dutton Ranch, Beth is unaware of Wes’s murder. Rip, though, knows quite a bit. He discovered Wes’s body in the first episode and disposed of it in a mine shaft by the end of the second. However, Rip doesn’t know who Wes was, and he’s deliberately avoiding finding out.
Whitney, Wes’s wife (played by Olivia Rose Keegan), reported her husband missing to the Sheriff before leaving town. This connects Rip and Beth to the Sheriff’s investigation, potentially leading them to the Dutton Ranch – the location where Wes was killed. To make matters worse for Rip, he’s been keeping the truth from Beth about discovering and getting rid of Wes’s body.
What does all of this have to do with Mariano? If the investigation into Wes’s murder gets more complicated for Beulah Jackson and the 10-Petals, Mariano might get directly involved. It’s also possible he’s already taken action against the Dutton Ranch. Think about how Beth and Rip suddenly acquired a bull with foot-and-mouth disease, which has now infected all of their cattle – that seems suspicious.
As a total “Yellowstone” fan, let me tell you, that one phone call Mariano made to Beulah Jackson? It just threw open the floodgates of potential drama at the Dutton Ranch. Right now, Beth and Rip have no clue about the real threat brewing in Rio Paloma, but trust me, Beulah is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s someone even more dangerous lurking out there on that huge Texas landscape, and I can’t wait to see what happens!
