The HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest I & II is now available on consoles and PC, bringing updated versions of the classic first two Dragon Quest games to modern systems. Like the HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest III, this release includes several improvements to the gameplay experience. It also adds new features that are available on all platforms, as well as a unique bonus for PC players.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake new features not present in DQ3 remake
- New difficulty options: While Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake included three difficulty options, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake lets you tweak them a bit more. You are able to enable or disable recovering HP/MP on levelling up and also toggle on invincibility. If you play on Dracky Quest, both of these are enabled by default. With Dragon Quest (the normal difficulty), recovering HP/MP is enabled, but invincibility is greyed out. In Draconian Quest, recovering HP/MP is turned off, but you can enable it. Invincibility is greyed out here as well.
- New helpful settings: In addition to enabling Quest Help Text and the Objective Marker like in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake also lets you display Treasure Chest locations and Secret Spots on the map. Both of these can be enabled or disabled in the Helpful Settings menu.
- PC shader compilation: This only really matters for the PC version and mainly on Windows, but Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake now compiles shaders on initial boot (it can take a few minutes) and then checks these (for a few seconds) whenever you launch the game after.

Will the new features be patched into Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?
Square Enix has confirmed that certain features won’t be added to the current version of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. While difficulty settings and improvements to how the game renders graphics might be added in a future update, finding the hidden locations and treasure chests is likely too much work to implement. Hopefully, though, we’ll see some changes down the line.
The HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest I & II is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (via Steam and Xbox on PC). We’ve created a complete set of guides, including full walkthroughs for both Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II, as well as information on all mini medals and scroll locations.
